'Our entire lives we are told what to think, what to feel, what to say. We are told who we are. All those personas we are given... But who am I really?' The Sum of all Parts is a shattered story of life, love, pain, memories, betrayal, and hope. Told through the eyes of six women, it reflects on how our thoughts create feelings, our feelings create behaviour, and our behaviour creates feelings: the endless cycle that drives life.

  • - A Life in Vascular Surgery
    af Peter Harris
    118,95 kr.

Blood is the life-force of every human being (and other animals). When it leaks out of our blood vessels, we die. When the aorta, the biggest blood vessel in the body, bursts, death usually comes quickly but for a lucky few it's not instantaneous. For them, survival is possible with emergency surgery. When a blockage in a blood vessel stops the blood from flowing, the deprived part of the body malfunctions and may decay if an operation to relieve the blockage is not performed. When Peter Harris first became a consultant vascular surgeon in the 1980s, the operations were big and bloody. When he finished in 2012, scalpels and saws had been largely superseded by bloodless needle-puncture procedures guided by X-ray images on a television screen. The evolution of the technology that made this possible is told primarily through the experiences of patients and includes vivid and, at times, harrowing descriptions of their operations and aftermath. Accounts of his own trials and tribulations and the good times are set against the troubled backdrop of the NHS starting in Broadgreen Hospital on the outskirts of Liverpool in 1979 and ending at University College Hospital in London in 2012.

London''s Firefighters is a wonderfully readable, lavishly illustratedanthology of articles, fiction and verse about the London Fire Brigade, most of it gathered from the Brigade''s house magazines London Fireman(1966-82) and London Firefighter (1982-2005).The book''s editor David C. Pike, himself a retired firefighter, has cleverlyselected material that delivers both a comprehensive history of theLondon Fire Brigade and a fascinating portrait of individual firemenand women, at work and (occasionally) at play. The book includesvivid, occasionally harrowing articles on important events involving theBrigade - the Sidney Street Siege of 1911, the London Blitz and the 1981Brixton riots, to name just a few - as well as covering key figures withinthe Brigade like James Braidwood and Massey Shaw. The more personalsections provide a revealing insight into the bravery, commitment andcamaraderie of ordinary working firefighters and their families. The numerous, often highly dramatic illustrations, many from the LondonFire Brigade''s own collection, offer a lively commentary on the text. All the profits from this book will go to the Fire Service charity,Firemen Remembered.David Pike was a London firefighter for more than 30 years, retiring atsenior rank in 1996. His first book, Beyond the Flames, was published byAustin Macauley in 2013.''A fascinating peek into the world of the London Fire Brigade. A finalistand highly recommended.''The Wishing Shelf Book Awards 2014/15, on Beyond the Flames

There were possibly twenty reasons why I hung the sign on my study door reading, 'Gone to Scotland... back in a month.' Reason number one: I was compelled to languish on a stone bench in the rocky high grounds of Edinburgh Castle, eyes closed, savoring the sweet sound of bagpipes echoing through the centuries-old stillness. The only thrill that could possibly surpass the bagpipes would be the sensory awakening at the Edinburgh Tattoo. Beyond that, my list included a longing to revisit the lochs in hopes of glimpsing the elusive Nessie, a craving for the earthy taste of haggis, a penchant for a lively Scottish reel and jig, and a need to purchase genuine Scottish shortbread. I also yearned for an authentic Scottish coat, gloves, and matching tam-o-shanter, the sight of a man in a kilt (preferably bending over to tie his shoelaces), and the desire to potter around a certain famous viaduct crossing.

Set in the final years of Queen Victoria's reign, at the beginning of the end of Empire in India, Flies to Wanton Boys records the life of Marian Chase as she defies convention to cross continents. Ignoring repeated advice that 'this is no place for a woman', she travels through India in search of experiences and relationships more extraordinary than she could ever have expected from her comfortable middle-class upbringing in London and on the South coast. Intoxicated by India; its colours, its sights, its people, she survives landslides and bandit tribesmen in the mountains of the Northwest Frontier, running aground on the mighty Brahmaputra River and devastating monsoon floods in the tea plantations of Upper Assam. And on her journey, she marries, gives birth to a daughter, is widowed, and then marries again to a man whose power and ego finally leave her abandoned and homeless. Her eventual return to England, to the family she left behind fifteen years earlier, is not enough to relieve the grief she feels at having squandered the life she once had. Marian was a remarkable woman who kept meticulous diaries, revealing with unique honesty not just the places and peoples she embraced but her emotions, her doubts, and her fears until eventually she had no energy left.

Beyond the Concept of Sport challenges tired assumptions about athletics to unveil sports' underestimated yet far-reaching social impact and philosophical significance. While governments downplay its influence, author Robert Griffiths recognizes that sports - especially cricket - deeply channels the human spirit for participants and fans alike. He eschews cliches to deliver fresh insight into sports' resonance. This is no dry academic tome, but rather a lively examination blending scholarship with accessibility. Griffiths brings iconoclastic yet sage opinions to unpacking how athletic pursuits shape culture and consciousness. He illuminates the under-appreciated role sports play in forging identity, purpose, inspiration, escapism and more for millions globally. Grappling with issues often overlooked when discussing athletics, Griffiths' unconventional analysis explores fandom, nationalism, arts, business, and the very meaning woven through sports' rituals. Written with passionate intellect, wry wit, and a distaste for the dull, Beyond the Concept of Sport cries out to be read by both die-hard fans and curious sceptics. After all, few human realms spark such fervour and unity across the world's divides like that of sports. This book captures that emotional impact while elevating sports as a subject worthy of serious yet spirited consideration.

The work now respectfully offered to the reader is a collection of sonnets in classical form. The writer is neither a Romantic nor a Modernist, and much herein draws aspects of character from the poetry of the 18th century and from the language of the law, which aspects of character are now instinctive to the writer. The poetry is, in general, serious but with a touch of humour in parts. It touches upon the various aspects of the human condition, including its joys, sorrows, insights, and aspirations. The writer would now respectfully offer the work to his readers, be they his critics or perhaps otherwise.
