Accompanies the Berthe Morisot: Shaping Impressionism at the Dulwich Picture Gallery 31 March - 10 September 2023Berthe Morisot: Impressionism and the 18th Centuryis the first major UK exhibition of the renowned Impressionist since 1950. In partnership with the Musée Marmottan Monet, Paris, it will bring together around 30 of Morisot's most important works from international collections, many never seen before in the UK, to reveal the artist as a trailblazer of the movement as well as uncovering a previously untold connection between her work and 18th century culture, with around 20 works for comparison.A founding member of the Impressionist group, Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) was known for her swiftly painted glimpses of contemporary life and intimate domestic scenes. She featured prominently in the Impressionist exhibitions and defied social norms to become one of the movement's most influential figures. Berthe Morisot: Impressionism and the 18th Century will draw on new research and previously unpublished archival material from the Musée Marmottan Monet to trace the roots of her inspiration, revealing the ways in which Morisot engaged with 18th century art and culture, while also highlighting the originality of her artistic vision, which ultimately set her apart from her predecessors.Highlights will include Eugène Manet on the Isle of Wight (1875), painted while Morisot was on honeymoon in England, and her striking Self-Portrait (1885), which will appear alongside Jean-Honoré Fragonard's Young Woman (c.1769) from Dulwich Picture Gallery's collection. Apollo revealing his divinity to the shepherdess Issé, after François Boucher (1892), In the Apple Tree (1890) and Julie Manet with her Greyhound Laerte (1893), are among nine paintings on loan from the Musée Marmottan Monet, many receiving their first ever showing in the UK.

Picasso & Abstraction explores a hitherto rarely explored area and demonstrates the sheer power of an extraordinary imagination. From the outset of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) ranked as one of the most influential artists in the evolution of the avant-garde and abstract art. From his earliest Cubist experimentations in 1907 with Les Demoiselles d'Avignon to his late work, which occasionally verged on gestural painting, Picasso's own relationship with abstraction remains intriguing. Through small steps forward, retractions and reversals, this relationship unfolds chronologically, thus revealing the artist's back-and-forth movement between abstraction and figuration.Testifying on how this evolution unfolded in Pablo Picasso's oeuvre, several essays also address its echo in the Russian avant-garde in the 1910s, his ceramic creations in Vallauris and the resurgence of sacred art in the aftermath of the Second World War.Through a broad selection of paintings, sculptures, drawings, and etchings - most of which were chosen from the extensive collection of the Musée national Picasso-Paris - this book invites us to step inside the artist's studio to discover his creative process.

Mississippi Dream is French photographer Larry Niehues' second book following Nothing Has Changed, his "love letter to America". For this book, Niehues chose to go deeper into his fascination with the Delta region of the United States and focus on the great state of Mississippi. In this passionate exploration inside the culture of the Deep South, Niehues captures aspects of Mississippi far beyond landscapes and blue skies. These are images that were taken throughout 2020 and 2022 while confronting a pandemic, as well as major flooding that deeply affected the Mississippi Delta. This raw and passionate body of work captures a range of moments; from epic performances by Blues legends at iconic local juke joints, to more intimate settings. It documents century-old Baptist traditions and everyday life in what is often referred to as "The Most Southern Place on Earth." The photographs tell a story that feels both nostalgic and surreal, and is sure to inspire a deep sense of what life is like in the Magnolia State. "America is still out there... you just have to look for it." - Larry Niehues

    - This first critical catalog of Jean Fautrier's paintings- Accompanies an exhibition at Christie's in Paris in February 2023Jean Fautrier (1989-1964) was a major 20th century artist. Trained at the Royal Academy of Arts and influenced by J.M.W. Turner, he was quickly noticed by the collector Jeanne Castel in 1923. At first, his style was figurative and played on contrasts of light. He expertly harnessed the essence of reality in order to transfigure it, redefining the genres of landscape painting, still lifes and nudes (especially in his series of dark works) during the inter-war period. A few years later, his approach underwent a radical shift and became much more abstract. He launched the "Informalist" art movement, playing with pictorial materials and combining different substances to create visions of an extraordinary material quality. Close to the great intellectual figures of his time, including Jean Paulhan, Paul Éluard, Francis Ponge, René Char and André Malraux, Fautrier never ceased producing remarkably powerful and politically resonant works, as is attested by his major series Otages (1943-1945), Objets (1947-1948) and Partisans (1956). In 1960, he was awarded the first prize for painting at the Venice Biennale. Boasting an exceptionally exhaustive iconography, this first ever comprehensive annotated catalogue of Jean Fautrier's paintings includes the technique, origin, exhibitions and bibliography for each work. It is supplemented with a detailed biography, technical analyses and authoritative scientific texts, as well as transcriptions of interviews and radio broadcasts from Fautrier's time.

PaperworldGuy Leclef is a paper artist. Rhythm, balance and aesthetics play a leading role in the creations through which he has developed his own unconventional language and technique. The result is richly expressive and coherent works of art that impress.Leclef makes his way through paper like an explorer, looking for order in the chaos, and, by harnessing his innermost emotions, creates a fascinating paper landscape with an existential dimension. The artist is constantly looking for new interpretations and forms of expression to take paper in new directions. By tearing his material into strips, then folding, moulding or cutting them up again, he has developed an impressive range of styles and ideas.Looking at his poetic landscapes, we discern craftsmanship in them, but in reality he is searching for sublimation through the flow of planes, shadows and tints in infinite nuances and colours. However, in the end, it's the paper that tells its own story.

Contemplative black and white photographs of a river in Maine that meditate on the connection between man and natureGary Green's pensive photographs of a stream near his home in Waterville, Maine were taken between 2017 and 2019. They are imbued with a formal beauty that is revealed in the act of gazing at reflections of the natural world in water. Each frame in this contemplative body of work explores texture, compositional balance, and the contrast between light and shadow. "These photographs... began as meditations on nature: quiet observations of the water and what was reflected, refracted, and shadowed upon its surface. The title is a stanza from Wallace Stevens's Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird. The poem invokes, among other themes, the idea that as nature we are all connected: the flora and fauna, the air above and the ground below. 'A man and a woman are one', he wrote, 'A man and a woman and a blackbird are one'." - Gary Green.

This beautifully produced book by New York-based conceptual artist Barbara Bloom (born 1951) explores the nature of gifts in relation to aspects such as wrapping, covering and uncovering, pleasure and generosity. A passionate collector of ornamental paper from all over the world, Bloom has studied the history and aesthetics of gift-wrapping in detail. In Gifts, she tries to blur the conventional distinction between art and life while offering new insights on notions of concealment and revelation, drawing on various historical examples. "Can the box be an artwork? Can the wrapping be the gift?" she asks her readers. Bloom's work has been shown internationally, including exhibitions at the Venice Biennale and The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Gifts is a further step in the artist's personal investigation into the world of objects, itself a gorgeously produced object ripe for gift giving. The volume includes a bookplate signed by the artist.

This book compiles the most recent work by Luc Tuymans (born 1958), one of Belgium's most eminent painters. Accompanying a 2015 exhibition, Luc Tuymans: Birds of a Feather, it shows the artist's fascination with the Scottish Enlightenment and its thinkers, who believed in the ability of humans to shape their future rationally and whose influence extended as far as the US. Stimulated by a visit to the art collection of the University of Edinburgh, Tuymans created three small portraits of Scottish philosophers, originally painted by the 18th-century portrait artist Henry Raeburn. The theme of the Enlightenment is combined with menacing horror, such as in a monumental dark work, "The Shore," which alludes to Goya's pinturas negras, or in the portrait of the murderer and cannibal Issei Sagawa. Acclaimed British novelist Will Self provides a remarkable short story for the publication, while art critic Colin Chinnery contributes an explanatory essay.

This volume documents a solo exhibition at the Haus der Kunst in Munich in 2008 by Luc Tuymans (born 1958). While the retrospective assembled 90 representative works from the last 30 years of the artist's career, the strength of the exhibition lay not only in the art displayed, but also in the location: the Haus der Kunst, built on Hitler's orders in 1933, was used to exhibit German art "by and for the people" and quickly became a center of cultural propaganda for the Nazi regime. In this space, Tuymans' works, often concerned with power relations and twentieth-century history, were grouped into "islands of meaning" to create a narrative that would resonate with the museum, and Tuymans further conceived of a site-specific mural. In this volume, Tuymans himself guides the reader through the exhibition and offers new perspective on his works' relations both to each other and to the installation space. The book includes an ex-libris bookplate signed by Tuymans. Limited quantity available.
