NAMED A RECOMMENDED BOOK OF 2018 BY: Buzzfeed - The Boston Globe - The Millions - InStyle - Southern Living - Vogue - Popsugar - Kirkus - The Washington Post - Library Journal - Real Simple - NPR"With his unerring eye for nuance and unsparing sense of irony, Rumaan Alam's second novel is both heartfelt and thought-provoking." -- Celeste Ng, author of Little Fires Everywhere From the celebrated author of Rich and Pretty, a novel about the families we fight to build and those we fight to keepLike many first-time mothers, Rebecca Stone finds herself both deeply in love with her newborn son and deeply overwhelmed. Struggling to juggle the demands of motherhood with her own aspirations and feeling utterly alone in the process, she reaches out to the only person at the hospital who offers her any real help--Priscilla Johnson--and begs her to come home with them as her son's nanny.Priscilla's presence quickly does as much to shake up Rebecca's perception of the world as it does to stabilize her life. Rebecca is white, and Priscilla is black, and through their relationship, Rebecca finds herself confronting, for the first time, the blind spots of her own privilege. She feels profoundly connected to the woman who essentially taught her what it means to be a mother. When Priscilla dies unexpectedly in childbirth, Rebecca steps forward to adopt the baby. But she is unprepared for what it means to be a white mother with a black son. As she soon learns, navigating motherhood for her is a matter of learning how to raise two children whom she loves with equal ferocity, but whom the world is determined to treat differently.Written with the warmth and psychological acuity that defined his debut, Rumaan Alam has crafted a remarkable novel about the lives we choose, and the lives that are chosen for us.--Stephanie Powell Watts, author of No One is Coming to Save Us

133,95 kr. "First up, we have a hippopotamus," said the ringmaster. "But this is no ordinary hippo. Please give a warm welcome for Hippo the Hilarious." The crowd started to clap as the enormous beast emerged. Hippo the Hilarious approached the microphone and started to tell jokes. Funeesha looked on in astonishment. She had not expected to be watching a talking hippo. She slowly turned her head towards the Funqueen and asked, "Is this for real?" "Well, I did tell you this was going to be special," said the Fun Queen. The crowd were enjoying the show so much that they were holding their stomachs and falling over with laughter. Funeesha and the Fun Queen were both having a hard time trying to keep themselves composed. They chuckled away continuously until Hippo the Hilarious was finished.

208,95 kr. A Note From The Author The fictional Kim Bailey of this story displays many traits one hopes today's youth will develop: determination, persistence, assertiveness, resourcefulness, and confidence. But Kim also makes two mistakes the author wishes to strongly caution children against. First, Kim is definitely wrong to purposely mislead her family by misrepresenting and withholding the truth. Pet ownership is a serious responsibility which must be shared by children and grownups alike. Children cannot raise pets, even for a few months, without assistance. Secondly, there are two litters of kittens in this story which, if not spayed or neutered could result in as many as 155,551 offspring in just 5 years of uncontrolled breeding. It is hoped that this story will promote and encourage a family discussion of the importance of spaying or neutering a pet. No matter how fun, or even educational, just ONE litter of kittens or puppies may seem, it is not the morally right decision in light of the fact that in the U.S. alone 4-5 million unwanted animals are destroyed each year. The author wants to assure the reader that Homework went to the vet to be spayed as soon as she came to live at Grandma's house!
