Romanttista kauhua vuodelta 1859!Littowin aatelissuku asuttaa hienoa Linnaisten kartanoa. Huhun mukaan suvun päälle on langetettu kirous, joka toteutuu suvun 13. polven aikana. Tarina kummastuttaa takavalkean edessä istuvaa Littowin perhettä – kiroushan on vain ikivanha munkin kirjoittama loru.Pian kartanossa alkaa kuitenkin tapahtua kummia. Topeliuksen tunnetuin teos on moniosainen romaani Välskärin kertomuksia, joka julkaistiin vuosina 1853–1867. Topelius tuli tunnetuksi kuitenkin myös runoilijana ja rakastettujen satujen kirjoittajana.
