Es will zum Verstehen geowissenschaftlicher Texte beitragen und ist zugleich ein wichtiger Studienbegleiter für angehende Geowissenschaftler.Die 13. Auflage wurde vollständig überarbeitet und neugestaltet. Die Begriffe wurden konsequent im Sinne der aktuell gültigen Theorie der Plattentektonik erläutert, wobei alte, überkommene Begriffe (wie z. B. Geosynklinale) nicht herausgenommen, sondern mit entsprechenden Erklärungen versehen und als heute nicht mehr verwendet gekennzeichnet wurden. Neu hinzugekommen ist die englische Übersetzung für jeden einzelnen Fachbegriff als Hilfestellung zum Verfassen geowissenschaftlicher Texte in englischer Sprache. Sämtliche Abbildungen sind in der neuen Ausgabe farbig angelegt. Sie wurden z. T. aus der vorherigen Auflage in überarbeiteter Form übernommen, zum größten Teil aber ganz neu erstellt.
