In the original edition of METHOD FOR TRUMPET by Jean Baptiste Arban, these instructions were given concerning the Exercises in Double Crotchets: "...In order to arrive at perfection of execution, these studies should be played with scrupulous attention to time and rhythm, due regard being had to the articulations therein indicated. The performer should begin slowly and increase his speed until he has become familiar with the exercise. Too great a rapidity of execution does not always impart to the performance the brilliancy expected. Precision and regularity are the real foundation of an excellent execution...." Arban's studies did include several articulation patterns, but he did not apply these patterns to each of the exercises. Furthermore, each exercise was presented only once, in just one key. These exercises are excellent for developing a smooth, even technique when practiced in all keys. In this book I have transposed each exercise into every key. I have listed articulation variations to be applied to each exercise. These variations include all of those used by Arban, plus many more of my own. I suggest that the student practice this material for a short time every day. Consider these exercises to be a long term project-that they must be completed in several years. Used in this way-in small doses every day-these exercises will have a very positive effect. Wesley Jacobs

Low Legato Etudes for Tuba contains short legato style etudes (from Bordogni) transposed into the lower register of the tuba. These studies are ideal when combined with Low Register Studies for Tuba (published by Encore) for development of a smooth, singing low register. While these etudes can be performed on high tubas they are intended primarily for the low (CC, BBb) instruments.

The etudes in this book have been chosen because they are musically interesting and technically challenging. I have made an effort to be certain that all of these etudes can be performed well on the tuba. Care has been taken to arrange for breathing and phrasing to make these etudes musically enjoyable to perform. The composers of these etudes remain unknown. In my research I discovered that each etude has at least two people that claim to have composed it. I have, therefore, decided not to give credit to any one composer for creating these studies. I have presented each etude at least three times in this book. Each version is in a different key. One of the versions is also in a different meter. This was done because of the great technical benefits to be derived from learning the same etude in different keys. By using the meter changes one can learn to perform music that looks somewhat different than it sounds. Practice and learn one etude at a time. Make certain that you have mastered each etude in all different keys before going on to another. Try to make each version of the etude sound the same as the other versions.

Performing Arban's Characteristic Studies on the tuba can be very challenging. Many students become frustrated when attempting these etudes. Some of the problems stem from the fact that these etudes were intended to be performed on a cornet or trumpet-two octaves higher than the tuba. I have edited this music to make it more playable for the tuba while still retaining its original technical value. Here are the Characteristic Studies as I think Arban would have written them for tuba. I have carefully indicated the tempi and phrasing in each study. Each of these etudes is playable in every respect at the tempo given. These etudes work best on the large CC or BBb tuba but can also be performed on high pitched tubas. Wesley Jacobs
