Perhaps at the instant it chanced there had fallen a breathless truce between them, and I being solitary, my own instinct took me. But having once found that pictured haven, I had found somewhat of content. I think half my youthful days passed in that low, book-walled chamber. The candles I burned through those long years of evening would deck Alps' hugest fir; the dust I disturbed would very easily fill again the measure that some day shall contain my own; and the small studious thumbmarks that paced, as if my footprints, leaf by leaf of that long journey, might be the history of life's experience in little, -from clearer, to clear, to faint-how very faint at last!

93,95 kr. A great many years ago, Augustus Caesar, then Emperor of Rome, ordered his mighty realm to be taxed; and so, in Judea, it is said, men went to the towns where their families belonged, to be registered for assessment. From Nazareth, a little town in the north of Judea, to Bethlehem, another little but more famous town in the south, there went one Joseph, the carpenter, and his wife Mary, -obscure and poor people, both of them, as the story goes. At Bethlehem they lodged in a stable; for there were many persons in the town, and the tavern was full. Then and there a little boy was born, the son of this Joseph and Mary; they named him JEHOSHUA, a common Hebrew name, which we commonly call Joshua; but, in his case, we pronounce it JESUS. They laid him in the crib of the cattle, which was his first cradle. That was the first Christmas, kept thus in a barn, 1856 years ago. Nobody knows the day or the month; nay, the year itself is not certain. After a while the parents went home to Nazareth, where they had other sons, -James, Joses, Simon, and Judas, -and daughters also; nobody knows how many. There the boy JESUS grew up, and it seems followed the calling of his father; it is said, in special, that he made yokes, ploughs, and other farm-tools. Little is known about his early life and means of education. His outside advantages were, no doubt, small and poor; but he learned to read and write, and it seems became familiar with the chief religious books of his nation, which are still preserved in the Old Testamen

153,95 kr. The second volume of Walter de la Mare's "Collected Poems 1901-1918" is a collection of poetry that explores a range of subjects, such as the paranormal, nature, love, memory, and death. The author's poetry is renowned for its melody and use of symbolic language. Some of the notable poems in this collection, which were written between 1913 and 1918, are "Mistletoe," which depicts the Christmas custom of kissing under the mistletoe, and "Winter," which captures the gloom and desolation of the season. While "Napoleon" explores the life and legacy of the French military leader, "The Moons" describes the various lunar phases. The song "All That's Past" emphasizes how ephemeral life is and how it must change. The notions of concealed knowledge and a desolate garden are explored in other outstanding poems in the book including "The Veil" and "The Sunken Garden." Both the spooky poems "The Witch" and "The Traveller" explore terror and mystery. Overall, this collection of poems demonstrates de la Mare's distinctive literary voice and style, which are renowned for their ability to captivate and haunt readers.

253,95 kr. After visiting a graveyard, a man finds his appearance has mysteriously changed. Returning home only to be received with horror and suspicion by his family, he must reckon with the social consequences of his bizarre transformation, while searching for an explanation and solution.Walter de la Mare has a reputation for crafting ghost stories of philosophical depth and haunting ambiguity. The Return, one of only two of his long-form supernatural works, follows this trend, and sees de la Mare exploring ideas of personal identity, spirituality, and the consequences of living in blind adherence to social expectations. Functioning as a fantastical agent of mid-life crisis, Arthur Lawford¿s condition uproots the foundations of his existence and casts into doubt all he had taken for granted about himself and his place in the world. There are no cheap scares or easy answers in The Return. It¿s a work rich with enigmatic detail, describing a struggle to find meaning in a world where nothing is certain; a theme as relevant and recognizable now as when the novel was first published in 1910.
