The players, the goals, the games, the scandals and the glory: the story of French football's chequered coming of age over the last 40 years.French football is an enigma: a puzzling jumble of brilliance and farce, flair and frailty, stunning success and abject failure. Its domestic league is mocked on social media as an uncompetitive 'Farmers League' and its clubs derided for underachieving in European competition. But France have reached four of the past seven men's World Cup finals, French players star week in, week out for the world's grandest clubs and the very best of French football - the roar of the Vélodrome, the glamour of the Parc des Princes, the shimmering brilliance of Zinédine Zidane, Éric Cantona and Kylian Mbappé - stands comparison with anything the sport has to offer. When it comes to scandal, meanwhile, the French are the best in the business, be it sensational match-fixing affairs, squabbles over sex tapes or meltdowns within the national squad. In this fascinating and exhaustively researched book, the first of its kind in the English language, Tom Williams brings to life French football's chequered coming of age over the last 40 years. He details how the starry-eyed romanticism that characterised the national team in the early 1980s gave way to an Italian-style pragmatism that would lead Les Bleus to the summit of the international game in the late 1990s. He delves into French football's rich history and explains the myriad ways - tactical, technical and cultural - in which France has shaped the game's evolution around the world.Featuring exclusive interviews with great figures of the French game such as Alain Giresse, Jean-Pierre Papin, Luis Fernandez, Guy Roux, Emmanuel Petit, Robert Pirès, Blaise Matuidi and Camille Abily, and with a cast of characters that also includes Michel Platini, Thierry Henry, Arsène Wenger, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Karim Benzema, Chris Waddle, Neymar Jr and Lionel Messi, it's a book no football fan will want to miss.

Unconvinced, the federal authorities and natural gas pipeline management companies believed the accidents were unforeseen catastrophes.Bob understood his evidence was circumstantial, replete with conjecture and extrapolations. 228,95 kr. Setting Of The Rising Sun In the previous novel, West Into The Rising Sun, Michael Flanagan survived the abyss of the Great Depression. His involvement with an agent of the Nationalist Chinese Government entangled Flanagan in her fight against Japanese aggression during the Sino-Japanese War of the 1930's. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, this fighter ace from World War I offered his services to his country in the war against Japan. Regardless of his experience, he was deemed too old to contribute to the war effort as a fighter pilot or in any other military capacity for that matter. This second novel in the trilogy begins at this critical point in Flanagan's life. Only late in the war is Flanagan approached by his government to conduct a military mission behind the Japanese lines in Burma. Flanagan was uniquely qualified for this mission. During the time he had worked with the Chinese, Flanagan had befriended the headman of a mountain tribe in Burma. The mission was a success, and Flanagan was ready to head home when he was recruited to perform one more mission deep behind the Japanese lines in French Indochina. The objective of this mission was to save the life of a gravely ill guerilla leader who had been effectively fighting the Japanese and Vichy French. The name of the leader was Ho Chi Min. Flanagan returned from this last mission after the war had ended. He routed his return home through Hong Kong to attempt to find his family. They had gone missing during the Japanese occupation. After finally returning home, Flanagan started a cargo airline that flew Pacific routes. This enterprise involved him in further adventures in Asia that finally lead to his involvement in the French Indochina War and other conflicts in Asia.

228,95 kr. West Into The Rising Sun As the Twenty-First Century progresses, we should look retrospectively back to the Twentieth Century and learn the lessons that it has to teach us. Tens of millions of people died at the hands of their fellow humans during the previous century. Some of the criminal perpetrators of these crimes turned murderous extermination into national policy or worse yet, an industry. The list of the targeted nationalities, ethnic groups, and religious affiliations is long as is the list of their tormentors. Most of us know about these events from the few paragraphs they are allotted in the cumulative history of a long period of time, like a century. There are still the remaining few, who were there and saw the dirty deeds as they occurred. There are also the remaining few, who saw firsthand what occurred when these horrors were brought to an end. Museums can be built and monuments erected, but they only serve as remembrances. They can only mark where the battlefields of the Great Wars were fought. You cannot see the tens of thousands who died in a single day in chaotic combat. Where Hitler's factories of death and work camps were located only empty buildings remain. The jungle has reclaimed the Japanese POW camps so no monuments stand to testify to the atrocities inflicted there. These are small testimonies to the daily suffering that happened in these places of depravity. No monument or museum can convey the true suffering that took place in these camps or on these battlefields. Those who know of such suffering must never stop talking about these atrocities regardless of the pain it may cause them. They have an obligation to educate those who have never experienced such suffering so that the call to arms or the call to hate is always questioned. I've seen the contest of the human body against steel. The body never wins. Though I was not alive during the period this story is set in, it was the violent prelude to our entrance into World War II. The story centers on the Sino-Japanese War and the impact of the Great Depression on our country. It's part of the life story of Michael Flanagan. He was a decorated fighter pilot during The Great War, but was brought to economic and emotional despair by the forces unleashed by the Great Depression. Before Flanagan ran out of options he was saved by a tough Irish Lady. His adventures began when he became involved with an aristocratic Chinese woman fighting to save her country from the ravages of Japanese aggression. The nineteen thirties was also a time of great technological innovation. It was the era of the great flying boats and the introduction of the DC-3. This plane revolutionized passenger aviation because of its capabilities and economic viability. Through Michael Flanagan's eyes, we see how these innovations transformed the world.

228,95 kr. The Longest Road Home is the third novel in the trilogy that chronicles the life of Michael Flanagan with the first being, West Into The Rising Sun. The conclusion of the second novel, Setting Of The Rising Sun, found Flanagan arriving home. He had been held prisoner by the Viet Minh following the defeat of the French at Dien Bien Phu in the spring of 1954. This defeat ended the First Indochina War, concluded France's colonial presence in Asia, and planted the seeds for the American involvement in Vietnam a decade later. Flanagan spent the next decade after the defeat of the French building his cargo airline to be a dominate force in the air cargo business across the Pacific. His airline prospered from the escalating war in Vietnam as the priority needs for men and materials grew with the intensity of the conflict. As part of the American military buildup in Vietnam in the mid-nineteen-sixties, an Army pilot arrived in Vietnam as part of this massive military deployment. His name was Jack Rogers and his arrival in Vietnam was much like Flanagan's arrival in France during World War I. They both stepped into a brutal conflict that they observed from the air, but didn't understand. Though two generations and decades apart, their lives seemed to have followed similar paths. In The Longest Road Home, we follow the life of Jack Rogers and observe the parallelism that it has with Flanagan's life. Sadly in many ways both their lives seem to prove that over a period of fifty years little was learned by earth's inhabitants, not even that one war just begets another. Jack Rogers was drawn deeper and deeper into the conflict in Vietnam by his relationship with a Vietnamese woman. Similarly Flanagan had also been drawn into Asian conflicts beginning thirty years earlier by his relationships with the oriental women that had passed through his life. As if by fate or the draw of kindred spirits the lives of the two men would cross each other's. This seemed especially true when a helping hand was most needed.

228,95 kr. The 1960's were a time of racial conflict and military confrontation in Asia. After living in New York all his life, the Army transferred Jim Sheridan to a post in the Deep South. At this time the defenders of segregation were making their last stand in a vain attempt to bolster the status quo. His country was being ripped apart along racial lines by these acts. At the same time the war in Vietnam was escalating and opening another deep wound in the soul of his country. He didn't understand the rationality for either of these conflicts, but found himself in the middle of both. The emotional forces of love and hate generated by these conflicts shaped Sheridan from what he was into what he became.

When I was younger, fishing was an epic game of hide and seek. Growing up, I cherished the time I spent with my father. I learned to fish as well as how to be a man, all under the guidance of a man who never said more than a handful of words at a time. However, my daughter brought a different kind of magic to the sport that I had never experienced before. For me, fishing used to be about the take but it's become more about the company you keep and the memories you take home with you. After working as a civilian contractor in the security industry for years, I know that the patience and persistence developed as a fisherman has helped me find balance in my career as well. I have truly loved this life and doing what makes me happy.

118,95 kr. BILL TUTTE CODEBREAKER 'THE GREATEST INTELLECTUAL FEAT OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR.' a testimonial to Bill Tutte and his codebreaking discovery in 1942 at Bletchley Park. Bill Tutte was a young, gauche PhD student, yet his remarkable breakthrough and continuing endeavour against a German cipher machine more complex than Enigma led to the development of the world's first programmable computer, Colossus. Colossus allowed top-secret messages between Hitler and his generals to be read within hours, contributing significantly to the success of the D-Day landings and the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany. So secret were the functions performed by Colossus that the work of Bill Tutte and his colleagues was classified for more than 50 years after the end of the Second World War. This novel not only explores Bill Tutte's codebreaking, but also examines his 'autistic' character, his background and close relationships all woven into the pressures and diversions of life at Bletchley Park. Prime Minister David Cameron wrote in 2012: We should never forget how lucky we were to have men like William 'Bill' Tutte in our darkest hour and the extent to which their work not only helped protect Britain itself but also shorten the war by an estimated two years, saving countless lives. I can say without doubt that Bill Tutte deserves the thanks of the British people.
