When Ryder Dane and Travis Jackson end up in a fight in their school lunchroom, the juvenile judge sentences them to community service at a local dog retreat. There, Lakota dog handler Chade Long Soldier introduces the two boys to his guest of honor, a legendary Narco dog named Rocket. In the days leading up to the pit bull's retirement ceremony, Ryder and Travis bond with the dog. As payback for the millions of dollars Rocket alerted to during his time with the DEA, he is stolen by the leader of a Mexican cartel. It is up to Ryder and Travis to rescue him.

After Ryan's near fatal encounter with the Wanagi, murders around Riverview begin to add up. Ryan and Dawn resolve the issue of turning in evidence to Sheriff MacNeil to clear Tall of the murder of the FBI agent. Due to his willingness to help, Ryan is asked to give a deposition to Carly Raven, investigator for the Bower Law firm representing Tall. His father, Jess MacNeil, the Sheriff of Riverview, soon finds himself working closely with Carly as a number of murders take place. He, in turn, is rescued by Dawn and Amos Thunder Hawk, the grandfather of Tall. Back in the day, when his mother taught at Stone Ridge, Amos was one of her staunch supporters, and Ryan had been to many pow-wows with the old Lakota holy man.Due to Carly's investigation into Teresa MacNeil's fatal crash, she reveals to Jess that Tall was set up for the ride that sent her car off the pass on that wintery night. FBI Agent Koops is there when Jess is confronted and he denies knowing anything about Tall's blood alcohol level. While Jess and Carly work together on investigating the drug deal that resulted in the killing of the FBI agent, Ryan and Dawn have a near-fatal encounter with the Branch brothers, prime suspects in the drug deal.Read less

In the conclusion of the story, all the characters end up in a deadly confrontation in the deeps of Stag-Heart, including a terrible encounter with Mandrake the bear. When a white buffalo calf is born on Amos Thunder Hawk's ranch, Nate Cloud steals both the calf and his mother and takes a short-cut through Stag-Heart. Nate encounters Mandrake and the cow is killed, while Nate and the calf escape. Tall, who has followed Nate into the woods, encounters the face-painted Wanagi locked in a death-struggle with the bear as he attacks Nate Cloud. Nate is seriously wounded by the bear, and Tall is forced to transport him to safety by horseback, while the demonic Indian flees the scene of the attack.Suspicions as to who savagely murdered the three kids so long ago in Stag-Heart have swirled above the heads of two men, Nathan Cloud and Gus Morgan, but in the end, Ryan learns the hard way who the real killer is, when FBI Agent Koops stabs his Irish wolfhound with the legendary deer antler. While Bran hangs between life and death, Ryan's dealings with Koops are brought to a final conclusion deep inside of Stag-Heart. Koops is gored by the Black Stag.Koops became unhinged so many years ago when his young son was arrested for drug possession. The entire affair resulted in a divorce and no visitation with his son. Blaming his son's three friends for involving his son in drugs, Koops took his revenge for suffering such a hardship by using the deer antler to savagely mutilate the three boys during their camping trip inside of Stag-Heart.Later, back in Riverview, Ryan and his grandfather, Doc Mac, are preparing to pull the plug on Bran, when Dawn, Tall and Amos arrive at Doc's office with the white buffalo calf. Whether it is a miracle or powerful magic of the calf, Bran is destined to live. The last lessons in the book are given by Tall to Ryan in regards to the two wolves that live inside of us all, and the wolf who wins is the wolf we feed the most. Tall, still knowing he is responsible for the death of Ryan's mother in the drunk driving accident, talks about Crazy Horse and the troubles he had to overcome to forgive himself, when he accidently killed a woman himself before he ever became a famous war chief.

Ryan knows Tall was just recently released from the state pen, having served ten years for the drunk driving accident that killed a white woman who was at one time Tall's teacher on the rez. She also happened to be young Ryan's mother.To Ryan, it is obvious that Tall has killed again. He wants to see that he is punished for his mom's death and also for murdering the Federal agent. But Dawn Red Feather, a young Lakota juvenile delinquent, has witnessed the shooting and she brings Ryan evidence that would clear Tall of the murder. Ryan's conflict is he does not want Tall cleared, and badly wants to see him punished for his mom's senseless, tragic death, and so he withholds the evidence.Stag-Heart is a mysterious place, located between Stone Ridge rez and the town of Riverview. For years, it has been considered a haunted forest where three young boys were found brutally murdered on a camping trip. White kids blame the savage slaughter on an old hunter who lost his hand in a beer trap, and now uses an antler to serve as his missing hand. Indian kids claim it was the Wanagi, a demon of the forest. While others blame the deaths on Mandrake, the killer grizzly who roams the woods. After encountering the bear when he was much younger, Ryan has stayed far away from the forest, and yet he finds himself returning there with Dawn to recover the drugs supposedly left behind by the dealers who actually shot the agent.
