Author of the book, The Crave, Kevin now presents three short stories intended to strike FEAR into the hearts of young readers. The book is another in the long line of books created by the Kyle Pease Foundation as part of their "Where There's a Wheel, There's a Way" book series. "Where There's a Wheel, There's a Way" is a colorful, well illustrated children's book that tells the inspirational story of the life of triathlete and Ironman Kyle Pease. Kyle was born with cerebral palsy and despite spending his life seated in a wheelchair with limited use of his arms, Kyle lives a life filled with much enjoyment and an endless string of personal victories. "Where There's a Wheel, There's a Way" shares Kyle's story taking us from elementary school student, to high school basketball team manager to competitive athlete and even to Ironman and founder of a non-profit organization, The Kyle Pease Foundation. With the help of his older brother, Brent, Kyle competes in athletic competitions and has twice completed the 140.6 mile Ironman competition. Pease is a college graduate from Kennesaw State University, holds down four jobs and is founder of the Kyle Pease Foundation. The purpose of the Kyle Pease Foundation (KPF) is to create awareness and raise funds to promote success for persons with disabilities by providing assistance to meet their individual needs through sports. Brookfield Orchards was established in 1918 by Arthur W. Lincoln, a stock broker in Boston who bought the orchard as a summer home. He planted apples trees and made applesauce, apple butter and apple jelly as a hobby and sold it from his office in Boston. The apples were processed in a canning plant in the center of North Brookfield on land now occupied by the Quaboag Corporation. When the stock market crashed in 1929 Arthur and his wife Lida moved from Newton to their summer home in North Brookfield. The growing and processing of apples continued. Hamilton Lincoln, son of Arthur, attended Yale University and was majoring in business when Arthur died suddenly. Hamilton graduated from Yale and returned to North Brookfield to help his mother, Lida, run the orchard. Hamilton married Betsy Coes and started a family. They had three children Louise, Tony and Bonnie. All three children worked at the orchard over the years after school and during the summers. Louise is the current President of Brookfield Orchards. Tony returned to the orchard after his navy career and worked beside his father, Hammy to learn the ins and outs of growing apples. After the passing of Hammy, Tony assumed all responsibilities of the Orchard until his death in 2007. The orchard business was very short-seasoned until the innovation of controlled-atmosphere storage in the 1950's. Brookfield Orchards built its own storage units in the 1960's. That allowed the farmstand to be open and have apples year round. Hammy and Tony were respected growers in the industry and worked with UMass to conduct experiments on different growing methods. They also researched ways to reduce the amount of pesticides we use, which is known as the Integrated Pest Management (I.P.M) Program, thus promoting the future of the apple growing business. We continue to use low-pesticide, I.P.M practices. David Nydam, Louise's son-in-law, joined the family operation in 1978, and is now Vice President and orchard manager. Hammy's wife, Betsy, passed away in 1959 and Hammy remarried five years later to Helen Proctor. Helen was the driving force behind the retail end of the business by adding jams, jellies and other merchandise to the store. Her innovative ideas have made our Country Store "one of a kind." Helen's daughter Martha Dwelly began making our apple pies and our widely-known apple dumplings here at the orchard. She created our bakery, a delicious and important part of our business. Over the years Brookfield Orchards has been fortunate to have family members and friends that have been loyal and dedicated during our busy harvest season. Eighteen Short Love Stories About Love in the Trenches of Everyday Life This book is not about falling in love with the man or woman of your dreams and riding off into a picturesque sunset. Though, in theory it can happen, that Fairy Tale kind of love is reserved for...well, Fairy Tales. Like many, I enjoy nothing more than the typical, predictable romantic flicks that end with the leading man finding his perfect soul mate, sweeping her off her feet and disappearing into tomorrow to live happily ever after. You can get that type of manufactured, conjured up, "Hollywood" love on Netflix for $9 a month by thumbing through the romantic film section. In real life, that type of love appears in glimpses, but is very difficult to sustain because unfortunately real life tends to get in the way. The love I'm speaking of is the kind that comes from the trenches of everyday life. The love in the mud of things, staged in the chaos of everyday life. I'm talking about that deep, dirty in your face love. A love that is fulfilling, yet scary at the very same time. Love that is 100% pure. Real love. Not necessarily the romantic kind of love between partners, but also the love that forms between friends, family, brothers or even strangers, as they navigate through the ugly that we are often forced to endure as we travel through the daily events called real life. We often have this strange misconception that we achieve true love only when everything is going perfectly in our lives. Enough time, enough money, enough perfection doesn't mean it is time for perfect love and harmony. Love in the trenches of everyday life is about helping the world to understand that love is dirty and reveals itself in the incredible happenings of every day. One doesn't have to look outside or seek perfection to find love. They simply have to reflect inward and realize that love is all around them all the time. Love is the mother, who accepts her child even though he has done so many horrible things. Love is the woman that stays with and supports her man even after he's fought a long battle with heroin addiction. Love is when a spouse checks out of their marriage and continues to receive support from the other even though there is nothing left to give. Love in the trenches is when a person goes bankrupt and the people they thought were there for them scatter like roaches spotting day light, while but a few remain in the trenches with them. Love is when a counselor takes a young man, who all the other counselors gave up on, to the Yankees game. Love is when a little brother from the Big Brother program is going to get expelled from school and the big brother stands beside him until he is strong enough to get back on track- that's all love in the trenches.
