257,95 - 398,95 kr. The Adventures of Sir Launcelot Greaves is a novel written by Tobias Smollett, first published in 1762. The story follows the adventures of Sir Launcelot Greaves, a knight who sets out on a quest to right wrongs and defend the honor of his lady love, Dulcinea. Along the way, he encounters a cast of colorful characters, including a squire named Timothy Crabshaw, a highwayman named Gamaliel Pickle, and a group of gypsies. Sir Launcelot's adventures take him from the English countryside to London, where he becomes embroiled in a series of duels and other dangerous encounters. The novel is a satirical take on the conventions of chivalry and romance, and Smollett uses Sir Launcelot's adventures to poke fun at the absurdities of the genre. The Adventures of Sir Launcelot Greaves is considered one of Smollett's most entertaining works and is still widely read and enjoyed today.Sir Launcelot being thus alarmed, started from his bed, and running to the window, beheld a cavalcade of persons well mounted, and distinguished by blue cockades. They were generally attired like jockies, with gold-laced hats and buckskin breeches, and one of them bore a standard of blue silk, inscribed in white letters, Liberty and the Landed Interest. He who rode at their head was a jolly figure, of a florid complexion and round belly, seemingly turned of fifty, and, in all appearance, of a choleric disposition. As they approached the market-place they waved their hats, huzza'd, and cried aloud, No Foreign Connections, -- Old-England for ever. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work

226,95 - 378,95 kr. The Adventures of an Atom is a satirical novel written by Tobias Smollett, originally published in 1749. The story follows the journey of an atom named Humphry Clinker, who is accidentally set free from a scientific experiment and embarks on a series of adventures. Throughout the novel, Humphry encounters a range of characters, including politicians, philosophers, and even the King of Prussia. Smollett uses these encounters to comment on the political and social issues of his time, such as corruption in government and the influence of the aristocracy. The novel is written in a humorous and playful style, with Smollett using puns and wordplay to add to the satirical tone. The Adventures of an Atom is considered one of Smollett's lesser-known works, but it remains an interesting and entertaining read for those interested in eighteenth-century literature and satire. The council of Twenty-Eight being assembled in a great hurry, Fika-kaka sat about five seconds in silence, having in his countenance, nearly the same expression which you have seen in the face and attitude of Felix on his tribunal, as represented by the facetious Hogarth in his print done after the Dutch taste. After some pause he rose, and surveying every individual of the council through a long tube, began a speech to this effect: ""Imperial Got-hama-baba, my ever-glorious master; and you, ye illustrious nobles of Japan, Quanbukus, Quos, Days, and Daygos, my fellows and colleagues in the work of administration; it is well known to you all, and they are rascals that deny it, I have watched and fasted for the public weal. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. 280,95 kr. Travels Through France and Italy is travel literature by Tobias Smollett published in 1766. After suffering the loss of his only child, 15-year-old Elizabeth, in April 1763, Smollett left England in June of that year. Together with his wife, he traveled across France to Nice. In the autumn of the next year, he visited Genoa, Rome, Florence and other towns of Italy. After staying in Nice for the winter he returned to London by June 1765. Travels Through France and Italy is his account of this journey. Smollett describes in great detail the natural phenomena, history, social life, economics, diet and morals of the places he visited. Smollett had a lively and pertinacious curiosity, and, as his novels prove, a very quick eye.

290,95 kr. The Expedition of Humphry Clinker was the last of the picaresque novels of Tobias Smollett, published in London in June 1771 (just three months before Smollett's death), and is considered by many to be his best and funniest work. It is an epistolary novel, presented in the form of letters written by six characters. Much of the comedy arises from differences in the descriptions of the same events and places seen by the participants. Attributions of motives and descriptions of behaviour show wild variation and reveal much about the character of the teller. The setting, amidst the high-society spa towns, inns, and seaside resorts of the 18th century, provides his characters with many opportunities for satirical observations on English and Scottish life, manners, and politics.

63,95 kr.

324,95 kr. The Adventures of Ferdinand Count Fathom is a novel by Tobias Smollett first published in 1753; It was Smollett's third novel. The central character is a villainous dandy who cheats, swindles and philanders his way across Europe and England with little concern for the law or the welfare of others. The son of an equally disreputable mother, Smollett himself comments that "Fathom justifies the proverb, 'What's bred in the bone will never come out of the flesh". Sir Walter Scott commented that the novel paints a "complete picture of human depravity". The novel's elements of terror and the supernatural have caused some historians of English literature to describe it as anticipating the themes of the Gothic novel.

316,95 kr. The Adventures of Roderick Random is a picaresque novel by Tobias Smollett, first published in 1748. It is partially based on Smollett's experience as a naval-surgeon's mate in the Royal Navy, especially during the Battle of Cartagena de Indias in 1741. In the preface, Smollett acknowledges the connections of his novel to the two satirical picaresque works he translated into English: Cervantes' Don Quixote and Alain-René Lesage's Gil Blas. The novel tells the life story (in the first person) of Roderick "Rory" Random, who was born to a Scottish gentleman and a lower-class woman and is thus shunned by his father's family.

246,95 kr. The Life and Adventures of Sir Launcelot Greaves, a novel by Tobias Smollett, was published in 1760 in the monthly paper The British Magazine. The novel, Smollett's shortest, differs stylistically from his previous works. Sir Launcelot is virtuous and strange, and he is surrounded by a Smollettian menagerie whose various jargons are part of this novel's linguistic virtuosity and satire. He is an eighteenth-century gentleman who rides about the country in armour, attended by his comic squire, Timothy Crabshaw, redressing grievances. These characters are obviously inspired by Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, and Smollett's novel has been compared unfavorably with Cervantes'.
