The present volume is a verbatim reproduction of Thomas Taylor's 2nd Edition of his Hymns of Orpheus. This 2nd edition (1824) represents Taylor's effort to significantly emend, alter and add to his 1st edition (1787). However, the former, superseded edition has been recirculated both online and in print in previous years, clearly in ignorance that a 2nd edition exists-an edition which in many ways renders the first obsolete.37 years of study and translation work occurred between Taylor's 1st and 2nd editions, during which time he translated the complete works of Plato, the complete works of Aristotle, much of the work of Proclus, Iamblicus and others of the later Platonists, along with several other works of Greek philosophy. Thus the difference between the 1st and 2nd editions of this text is the difference between the work of a young, eager and gifted, but relatively new philosopher on the one hand, and the work of one of, if not the most knowledgeable English Platonists ever to have lived. For this reason alone, it is rather worthless to continue printing and circulating the 1787 edition; all such editions ought to be left to expire in favour of Taylor's own extensively revised 2nd Edition. Indeed, we can be confident in suggesting that Taylor would not have committed the time and energy required to produce his 2nd edition had he not himself recognized the need for significantly revising his first effort (a facsimile reprint would otherwise have sufficed). There are several changes between the 1st and 2nd editions: the numbering of the hymns, the introduction, notes, and significant changes to the translation itself.In the present volume, the formatting of the original has been changed in order to render the text more easily readable. The copious footnotes found in the original have been collected and placed in order at the end of the Hymns, allowing for a more easily readable layout for each individual hymn. In the margins we have added the pagination of the original edition, so that all references made to the original over the intervening centuries may be easily traced in the present volume, despite its altered pagination. This translation of two works on pagan theology with a Platonic theme by the Roman Emperor Julian is extremely rare. It was originally published in 1793, and reprinted in 1932 in an edition of 500 copies, one of which we used as the basis for this book. (The 1932 edition had no copyright notice). The short-lived Emperor Julian (331-363 CE) suceeded Constantius in 361 CE. He shocked the empire by renouncing Christianity, which earned him the title 'the Apostate' by Church historians. He issued an edict of religious freedom, rebuilt the Pagan temples, ended banishment of religious exiles, and eliminated special privileges for Christian officials. He founded the Neo-platonic school of philosophy. Julian spurned the decadant Byzantine palace; he dressed simply, studied philosophy, promulgated tax reform, and fostered study of the humanities and arts. However, his reign lasted only twenty months; he died in June of 363 in battle with the Persians, possibly at the hand of a Christian. This book is as notable for its author as for its translator. Thomas Taylor (1758-1835) was a prolific classicist and one of the first modern neo-Platonists. Although he was deprecated while alive, he had a huge influence on H.P. Blatavsky and other theosophists.

Many sound teachings on justice, non-violence, temperance, forebearance, and other virtues are given herein, along with teachings on lifestyle, community, politics and family life. To aid the reader in seeking out specific doctrines or ideas, we have provided a list of detailed contents for each chapter of the biography. Iamblichus's biography is a text that may be read straight through, or piece by piece, or one selection at a time. Much can be learned from even a basic perusal of the contents of any selected chapter, and many fine quotes on specific topics will be found by using the detailed contents to locate them. In addition to the Life of Pythagoras, Taylor included several other Pythagorean texts in his original publication. We have included these, along with few additional translations which he himself approved as worthy of study. Texts included in both the 1818 and present volumes are as follows: 1. Taylor's introduction and his translation of the Life of Pythagoras along with his Notes and Additional Notes, which shed much light on the subjects dealt with in the biography. 2. His collection of the "Fragments of the Ethical Writings of Certain Pythagoreans." From the latter has been removed his rendering of the "Sentences of Sextus" (see editor's note in Taylor's introduction). Additional texts included in the present volume, which have been added as an Appendix, are as follows: 1. Taylor's translation of "The Pythagoric Sentences of Demophilus." 2. Two translations from William Bridgman: "The Similitudes of Demophilus" and "The Golden Sentences of Democrates." 3. William Bridgman's translation of "The Pythagoric Symbols, with the Explanations of Iamblichus," with edits drawn from Taylor's own translation of several of the symbols and explanations, which were included in the original 1818 publication of this Life of Pythagoras. The latter translations being added to the present volume provides the reader with a fine collection of truly Pythagorean texts, covering the major themes and topics of their teachings. This ought to give the liberal reader enough to gain a footing into the central doctrines and practices of the Pythagoreans, and these will further aid in a study of the Platonic and Orphic texts, all of which rightly belong together.
