English novelist Talbot Baines Reed, well-known for his schoolboy books from the 19th century, wrote "Follow My Leader: The Boys of Templeton." The novel, which was published in 1877, chronicles the experiences and hardships that a group of schoolboys at Templeton School encounter. Dick Colthurst, a freshman at Templeton, is the main character of the novel. Dick's experiences include his school interests, friendships, and mishaps with his peers. The friendships and tensions that arise amongst the lads are depicted in the book, underlining the peculiarities of Victorian boarding school life. The impact of leadership on the boys' behavior is one important theme. "Follow My Leader," as the title suggests, highlights a key individual whose actions influence the others. The story may touch on issues of friendship, authority, and the difficulties young people encounter juggling their personal and academic lives. Young readers were drawn to the writing style of Talbot Baines Reed, who was well-known for his emphasis on school stories. His writings frequently included moral teachings together with a realistic depiction of 19th-century school life. It's expected that "Follow My Leader: The Boys of Templeton" will provide a nostalgic look at the exploits and development of its young characters.

It was a proud moment in my existence when Wright, captain of our football club, came up to me in school one Friday and said, "Adams, your name is down to play in the match against Craven to-morrow." I could have knighted him on the spot. To be one of the picked "fifteen," whose glory it was to fight the battles of their school in the Great Close, had been the leading ambition of my life-I suppose I ought to be ashamed to confess it-ever since, as a little chap of ten, I entered Parkhurst six years ago. Not a winter Saturday but had seen me either looking on at some big match, or oftener still scrimmaging about with a score or so of other juniors in a scratch game. But for a long time, do what I would, I always seemed as far as ever from the coveted goal, and was half despairing of ever rising to win my "first fifteen cap." Latterly, however, I had noticed Wright and a few others of our best players more than once lounging about in the Little Close, where we juniors used to play, evidently taking observations with an eye to business. Under the awful gaze of these heroes, need I say I exerted myself as I had never done before? What cared I for hacks or bruises, so only that I could distinguish myself in their eyes? And never was music sweeter than the occasional "Bravo, young 'un!" with which some of them would applaud any special feat of skill or daring.

  • - With Notes, Historical and Bibliographical, on the Rise and Progress of English Typography

Talbot Baines Reed wrote in a period of transition when hot metal typesetting and offset printing were transforming the scale and scope of printing. In the previous 350 years, England had experienced civil war and started the Industrial Revolution. The dissemination of printed information and learning is inextricable to this history, and the art with which this was done is a quintessential part of English culture. Reed is distinctly aware of the great debt that his contemporaries had to the early typographers (notable among them William Caslon - considered the first great English typographer - and John Baskerville), and everywhere in his work is this shown in his meticulous and unstinting presentation of the fascinating details of their artistic exploration and expression. Modern readers will enjoy the technical and historical insight this work affords, and also find the style and presentation fresh and engaging.

A shot! a yell! silence! Such, as soon as I could collect myself sufficiently to form an idea at all, were my midnight sensations as I sat up in my bed, with my chin on my knees, my hair on end, my body bedewed with cold perspiration, and my limbs trembling from the tips of my fingers to the points of my toes. I had been peacefully dreaming-something about an automatic machine into which you might drop a Latin exercise and get it back faultlessly construed and written out. I had, in fact, got to the point of attempting nefariously to avail myself of its services. I had folded up the fiendish exercise on the passive subjunctive which Plummer had set us overnight, and was in the very act of consigning it to the mechanical crib, when the shot and the yell projected me, all of a heap, out of dreamland into the waking world.

Your trip is sure to have done you good, and if you only fell in with pleasant people I expect you will have enjoyed yourself considerably. What are you going to do when you get home-still follow the profession of a gentleman at large, or what? Term opened here again last week, and the Sixth came back to-day

The Willoughby Captains: A School Story is a novel written by Talbot Baines Reed and originally published in 1887. The story takes place in an English boarding school and follows the adventures of two boys, Jack and Bob Willoughby, who are both captains of their respective cricket teams. The boys are determined to lead their teams to victory in the annual cricket match against their rival school, but they face numerous challenges along the way. They must deal with rivalries and jealousies among their own teammates, as well as a group of troublemakers from the other school who are determined to sabotage their efforts. Along the way, Jack and Bob learn important lessons about leadership, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The novel is a classic example of the school story genre, which was popular in England in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is a charming and engaging tale that will appeal to readers of all ages, especially those who enjoy stories about sports, adventure, and friendship. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. On a raw, damp morning in early spring, a rather forlorn group of three youngsters might have been seen on the doorstep of Mountjoy Preparatory School, casting nervous glances up and down the drive, and looking anything but a picture of the life and spirits they really represented. That they were bound on an important journey was very evident. They were muffled up in ulsters, and wore gloves and top hats-a vanity no Mountjoy boy ever succumbed to, except under dire necessity. Yet it was clear they were not homeward bound, for no trunks encumbered the lobby, and no suggestion of Dulce Domum betrayed itself in their dismal features. Nor had they been expelled, for though their looks might favour the supposition, they talked about the hour they should get back that evening, and wondered if Mrs Ashford would have supper ready for them in her own parlour.

"It was perfectly plain, Hudson, the boy could not be allowed to remain any longer a disgrace to the neighbourhood," said my uncle. "But, sir," began my poor old nurse. "That will do, Hudson," said my uncle, decisively; "the matter is settled-Frederick is going to Stonebridge House on Monday." And my uncle stood up, and taking a coat-tail under each arm, established himself upon the hearthrug, with his back to Mrs Hudson. That was always a sign there was no more to be said; and off I was trotted out of the dreaded presence, not very sure whether to be elated or depressed by the conversation I had overheard.

The snow lay thick round Maxfield Manor. Though it had been falling scarcely an hour, it had already transfigured the dull old place from a gloomy pile of black and grey into a gleaming vision of white. It lodged in deep piles in the angles of the rugged gables, and swirled up in heavy drifts against the hall-door. It sat heavily on the broad ivy-leaves over the porch, and blotted out lawn, path, and flowerbed in a universal pall of white velvet. The wind-flattened oaks in the park were become tables of snow; and away over the down, to the edge of the cliff itself, the dazzling canopy stretched, making the gulls as they skimmed its surface in troubled flight appear dingy, and the uneasy ocean beyond more than ever grey and leaden.
