  • - Body Part Imagery as Patristic Metaphor for Vice and Virtue
    af Stephen Morris
    88,95 kr.

Body parts, and their veneration as relics, were an important devotional focus in late antique Christianity. These body parts were seen as a locus of power and sanctity which continued to exert influence over the world in their vicinity. Patristic authors used images of various body parts (hair, right hands vs. left hands, genitalia, gender, old age) as metaphors for both good and evil, virtue and vice. The inner reality of a person's spirit would not always be obvious in this world but would be revealed in the world to come, often by the condition of these various body parts when the body was resurrected at the Last Judgment.

Darwin's evolution is now complete. Darwin Hunter made his literary debut more than twenty years ago when he chronicled the lifestyle warfare taking place in idyllic rural Vermont between the entrenched natives ("Woodchucks") and the invaders from the south ("Flatlanders") in a self-proclaimed magnum opus, "Beyond Yonder." The misadventures continued as he made an unorthodox run for public office, embracing a policy of Total Disclosure in "The King of Vermont." Meanwhile, to the south in the coastal Flatlands in a seaside community just south of Boston called Indian Mound, Arthur Gordon, disgraced Hollywood film director, tries to recover his self-esteem by restoring a rundown summer cottage and catching a striped bass on a fly rod in the mini-epic "Stripah Love." Now, the entire cast of characters from both locations come together for the final chapter (well, who knows?) of Darwin's journey in "Stories and Tunes." Darwin Hunter is the MegaBucks Czar, a man with unassailable authority over the state lottery. After an epiphany that reveals to him the regressive nature of this institutionalized gambling, Darwin becomes a modern day Robin Hood, using his power to more fairly distribute the wealth, at least in the Brigadoon that is Vermont. He is assisted and challenged by the most colorful cast of characters since ... uh, "Canterbury Tales." There's the rappin' Shappy Shapiro, originator of the Peace Pretzel; BJ Bosco, equally at ease shooting with a camera or a gun; the silently voracious Dog Sled Girl; Henry Drown, entrepreneur from Down Under; and Captain Goo-Roo, the musician whose life is defined by the power chords of rock and roll. Vermont is the stage for a madcap farce with pretensions of searing social commentary. Things gotta change.

A book of short stories may not, these days, be fashionable in publishing eyes. The sixteen presented here are not just a good read, they are helpful to those learning the art of clinical medicine. And if there is also an interesting history the book will be intriguing and helpful reading. The author has with skill spread this book over 100 years to give a clinical picture seen in a variety of ills and their sequelae in chronological order, 1910 to present day. While perhaps the emphasis is on such cases and emergencies once seen more often by the family practitioner, as in one story of toxaemia of pregnancy and in a primapara of 36 years, in the year 1941. This is told through family eyes and is a masterly piece of writing on an important aspect of obstetrics.

  • - Byzantine Christianity and Homosexuality
    af Stephen Morris
    409,95 kr.

In the world of early Byzantine Christianity, monastic rules acknowledged but discouraged the homosexual impulses of adult males. What most disturbed monastic leaders was adolescent males being accepted as novices; adult men were considered unable to control their sexual desires for these ""beautiful boys."" John Chrysostom, the Archbishop of Constantinople (397-407), virulently denounced homosexuality, but was virtually the only Byzantine cleric to do so. Penances traditionally attached to heterosexual sins--including remarriage after divorce or widowhood--have always been much more severe than those for a variety of homosexual acts or relationships. Just as Byzantine churches have found ways to accommodate sequential marriages and other behavior once stridently condemned, this book argues, it is possible for Byzantine Christianity to make pastoral accommodations for gay relationships and same-sex marriage.
