143,95 kr. As the Revolutionary War progressed, tensions and resentments ran high with the promise of lasting long after the surrender. Amid this chaos, the daily lives of citizens and soldiers were changed, often characterized by the polarizing political beliefs they held. Amid this disarray, a wealthy merchant, Col. Johnanthan Hamilton, welcomes Captain John Paul Jones to dinner in his lavish home in Berwick, Maine. While the two men discuss the war and enjoy their dinner, the colonel's daughter, Mary is only concerned about a ship sailing away from America with news of surrender. Named the Ranger, the ship is full of men from different backgrounds, but Mary is only concerned with one. When he and Mary first met, Roger Wallingford was a man of loyalist leanings. This greatly opposed Mary's views, as she and her family are greatly dedicated to the American cause. However, as the two grew closer, Roger began to see the error in his thoughts, slowly losing the sympathy he held for the British as he fell in love with Mary. Now, Roger is doing his part to be a helpful crew member on the Ranger, but while a traitor lurks on the ship, seeking turmoil, Roger's newly found allegiance to America is tested, and his future with Mary is threatened. With settings of Maine, the Atlantic, France, and England, The Tory Lover provides detailed insight and description of multiple landscapes and people during the Revolutionary War. While portraying the opposing ideologies, high tension, and betrayal expected during the war, Sarah Orne Jewett's work also depicts a touching romance between star-crossed lovers. With these exciting elements and the insightful portrayal of historical figures and settings, The Tory Lover remains to be just as entertaining to a modern audience as it is educational. This edition of The Tory Lover by Sarah Orne Jewett features an eye-catching new cover design and is presented in a font that is both modern and readable. With these accommodations, this edition is accessible and appealing to contemporary audiences, restoring The Tory Lover to modern standards while preserving the original genius and beauty of Sarah Orne Jewett's work.

- Tale of a Small-Town Life
73,95 kr. The narrator, a Bostonian, returns after a brief visit a few summers prior, to the small coastal town of Dunnet, Maine, in order to finish writing her book. Upon arriving she settles in with Almira Todd, a widow in her sixties and the local apothecary and herbalist. The narrator occasionally assists Mrs. Todd with her frequent callers, but this distracts her from her writing and she seeks a room of her own. Renting an empty schoolhouse with a broad view of Dunnet Landing, the narrator can apparently concentrate on her writing, although she continues to spend a great deal of time with Mrs. Todd, befriending her hostess and her hostess''s family and friends. The schoolhouse becomes a place of mythic significance and for the narrator the location is a center of writerly consciousness from which she makes journeys out and to which others make journeys in, aware of the force of the narrator''s presence, out of curiosity, and out of respect for Almira Todd.

188,95 kr. Though not as well-known as the writers she influenced, Sarah Orne Jewett nevertheless remains one of the most important American novelists of the late nineteenth century. Published in 1884, Jewetts first novel, A Country Doctor, is a luminous portrayal of rural Maine and a semiautobiographical look at her world. In it, Nans struggle to choose between marriage and a career as a doctor, between the confining life of a small town and a self-directed one as a professional, mirrors Jewetts own conflicts as well as eloquently giving voice to the leading womens issues of her time. Perhaps even more important, Jewetts perfect details about wild flowers and seaside wharfs, farm women knitting by the fireside and sailors going upriver to meet the moonlight, convey a realism that has seldom been surpassed and stamp her writing with her signature style. A contemporary and friend of Willa Cather, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Julia Ward Howe, Sarah Orne Jewett is widely recognized as a pathfinder in American literary history, courageously pursuing a road less traveled that led the way for other women to follow.
