Mężczyzna budzi się z przeraźliwym bólem głowy. Nie wie, gdzie jest, ani nawet, jak się nazywa. Wszystko wokół wygląda zupełnie obco. Tylko jedna postać wydaje się znajoma. Jej głos budzi skojarzenia z przeszłością, ale kobieta zdaje się go nie znać. Na zewnątrz dym spowija miasto. To Tarnowskie Góry, a właściwie Festung Tarnowitz. Sam środek wojny Niemców z Rosjanami... Robert J. Szmidt (ur. 1962) – polski autor fantastyki, tłumacz. Debiutował w połowie lat 80. na łamach prasy. W latach 90. był wydawcą czasopism z branży filmowej. W 2001 roku stworzył magazyn literacki „Science Fiction", który stał się najważniejszym tytułem na rynku polskiej fantastyki. Szmidt jest także twórcą portalu FantastykaPolska.pl. Jest autorem kilkunastu powieści i wielu opowiadań. Jego powieść „Metro2033: Otchłań" została przetłumaczona na język rosyjski. W 2015 roku otrzymał tytuł Wrocławianina Roku. Dwa lata później został nagrodzony srebrną, a w 2018 roku złotą Odznaką Honorową Zasłużony dla Województwa Dolnośląskiego.
