    In Form eines Briefes an seine in den USA lebenden Enkel versucht der Autor eine Erklärung für die Ursachen jener Katastrophe zu finden, die in den dreißiger und vierziger Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts von Deutschland ausgehend über Europa hereinbrach und den Tod von Millionen von Menschen zur Folge hatte. Der Autor meint diese Ursachen im Wesentlichen an einer menschlichen Neigung zur Irrationalität festmachen zu können, einer Neigung, die über irrationale Vorstellungen zu irrationalen Handlungen führt. Wenn auch Ideen, wie sie in der ersten Hälfte des letzten Jahrhunderts in einer Rassenlehre - einschließlich eines Antisemitismus - und dem Führerprinzip zu Tage traten, mit der Niederlage Deutschlands 1945 weitestgehend an Bedeutung verloren haben, so sind dennoch zahlreiche irrationale Vorstellungen weiterhin verbreitet und wirken bestimmend auf das Zusammenleben innerhalb der menschlichen Gesellschaft ein. Verhängnisvoll werden diese Ideen dann, wenn in ihnen das Erreichen eines angeblich höheren Zieles über das von Menschenleben gestellt wird. Der Autor diskutiert einige der bekannt gewordenen irrationalen Vorstellungen und versucht ihre Abwegigkeiten und Widersprüchlichkeiten aufzuzeigen.
