Der Märchendichter war neben seiner Poesie auch als Hochschullehrer tätig und gilt zudem als einer der bedeutendsten Chirurgen des 19. Jahrhunderts. Er gilt unter anderem als Begründer der modernen wissenschaftlichen Chirurgie.Seine literarischen Werke verfasste er unter dem Pseudonym Richard Leander. Neben seinen Liedern, Gedichten und Geschichten verfasste er die Märchensammlung "Träumereien an französischen Kaminen", welche zu seinen größten schriftstellerischen Erfolgen zählt.

Dieser Wunschring kommt ihm unbemerkt abhanden, doch es zeigt sich, dass er es auch ohne Einsatz des Ringes aus einer Kraft zu Wohlstand und Ruhm bringen kann – bestärkt durch die Annahme, er habe immer noch eine Wunsch offen.Richard von Volkmann (1830-1889) war ein deutscher Dichter, Verfasser von Märchen, Chirurg und Hochschullehrer. Nach seinem Medizinstudium, seiner Promotion sowie Habilitation arbeitete er als praktizierender Arzt in Halle und machte sich einen Namen als einer der bedeutendsten Chirurgen des 19. Jahrhunderts. Seine literarischen Texte verfasste er unter dem Pseudonym Richard Leander. Vor allem seine 1870/71 während des Deutsch-Französischen Krieges verfassten Märchen „Träumereien an französischen Kaminen" waren sehr beliebt.
