"Anton Graff ist es wie manchem andern Künstler des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts ergangen. Von seinen Zeitgenossen wurde er überschätzt, mit Tizian, Van Dyck, Rembrandt verglichen; die nachfolgende Generation zuckte spöttisch über ihn die Achseln; erst in unserer Zeit hat die Über- und Unterschätzung einer gerechten Anerkennung Platz gemacht. Bei einer eigentümlichen Gelegenheit ist die Aufmerksamkeit wieder auf die Grafischen Bilder gelenkt worden: als dem Bestreben, die Werke unserer Klassiker in der ursprünglichen Gestalt ihres Textes herzustellen, sich die Forderung anreihte, auch von der äussern Erscheinung unserer grössten Denker und Dichter alle willkürlichen und phantastischen Vorstellungen zu beseitigen, als es galt, die unzweifelhaft echten und besten Originalbildnisse derselben zusammenzusuchen. Da zeigte sich zunächst die kulturgeschichtliche Wichtigkeit der Graff'schen Bilder. Der ganze grosse Zeitraum von da an, wo das gepuderte Haar mit Haarbeutel, der bunte Sammetrock mit Halsbinde und Jabot, die Kniehose mit seidenen Strümpfen aufkommt, bis dahin, wo Friedrich Wilhelm II. anstatt in Kniehosen in langen Pantalons im Bade zu Pyrmont erscheint und nach dem Vorgange Karl August's von Weimar der Zopf schwindet, das freie Haar in schlichter Anordnung sein Recht wieder erhält, also die Spanne von mehr als einem halben Jahrhundert ist durch die Graff'schen Bildnisse vertreten. In dieser Zeit hat kaum ein grosser Fürst, Staatsmann, General, Gelehrter, Dichter, Künstler, Kaufmann in Deutschland gelebt, dessen Züge nicht von Graff's Pinsel auf die Leinwand gebracht wurden."
