My life felt shattered and my success seemed foggy. I had numerous thoughts of writing this book, in hopes that it would reach those who may be dealing with the same type of experience. I am still haunted by the fact that temptation is still knocking at my door. I am a blessed man who has overcome significant tests of this persecution. My mission now is to help youth and adults to not be discouraged into the trials I faced. We all face challenges in our lives. My story is more dramatic than the average person. It is a true testament of how I have struggled in the suffering of many attacks and adversity. I realize my circumstances were the best for me because it made me a stronger person for having gone through them. Facing 350 years to life, it seems unreal and yet it was very real for me in 1996. My life was turned upside down and my hopes and dreams of playing in the NBA were shattered because of my poor choices; choices that ultimately sent me to prison for 15 years and changed my path in life. While I am still haunted by the fact that I am a two-striker and can easily fall back in to the system according to the 3-strike law, I am a changed man who sees life differently and whose mission now is to help youth not fall into the temptations that I faced.We all face trials and challenges in our lives. Carlton Ward, Jr. Distinguished Professor (now emeritus), formed and directed a research team of students to look into the rise of arms industries in newly industrializing countries. In this book, Dr. Sanders has updated, revised, and added significantly to the initial study, completing it as a Senior Fellow with the University. In the United States we think chiefly of our own country and other major powers such as the Soviet Union, Great Britain, and France as international arms producers and exporters. Sometimes we include a few other European nations (Sweden, Switzerland and Belgium) and Japan. Yet, almost unnoticed by most of us, a number of the more technologically advanced Third World countries have built significant arsenals. These nations now manufacture and export sizable quantities of arms. In this volume, Dr. Sanders explores the nature of arms production growth in these industrially vibrant countries and assesses the consequent implications for US national security.
