In reality, they were just small pieces in a larger, complicated game. But they were more than that. They were also Americans. Growing up in Cleveland presented author Ralph Harris with unique challenges. He-a young black man-was constantly stopped by police wanting to know what he was doing driving through their white suburbs. Meanwhile, he watched the areas in which his family and friends were allowed to live decline to the point of being barely livable. But even that couldn't prepare him for war. In 1968, when he was nineteen, Harris was drafted-and the ensuing year would change the course of his life. He returned home from his tour of duty suffering from debilitating PTSD. Many veterans share a similar story: blinding nightmares, flashbacks, unpredictable moods, and irrational responses that often prevent a normal life. Expendable and Necessary, Harris's compelling memoir, is the result of a healing journey-for it was only by mentally reliving events and chronicling his demons that Harris was able to put them to rest.

They happen on a high place or in a magical land. But what if the meeting didn't happen in a distant or magical place, somewhere you had to go? What if it occurred inside of you-every day, at any moment-and you were God's happiest, most magical place to be? Meet Elliot Samuelson. He's 12 and lives in the little town of Sarx. He has already learned to cope. He copes with his dad's expectations. He copes with his mom's need for a sparkling family image. He copes with his teacher's rules. He copes with the bully's threats. He's a coper. In fact, everyone in Sarx has from a young age learned how to cope-and that's the problem. They all know how to cope. But no one knows how to truly live, until Elliot meets a stranger on the edge of town, who shows him a better way. A Perfect way. And Elliot's life, and the town's, are never the same. - With an Introduction
148,95 kr. The subject of advertising is often treated with indifference by economists and disdain by the public. Indeed, from time-to-time, there have been calls to ban advertising. Though there has been no general ban, advertising has been prohibited in some sectors and further regulation in this field is continually being considered. Given the importance of advertising in political discussion and the lack of evidence regarding its role and effectiveness, Ralph Harris and Arthur Seldon published Advertising in a Free Society in the late 1950s. This seminal work provided a dispassionate and serious analysis of the subject. It concluded that advertising played a positive role in communicating information and building brand loyalty. Interestingly, some of the most dishonest forms of promotion came from politicians. Christopher Snowdon has skillfully abridged Harris and Seldon's work whilst adding important modern insights. Perhaps the most important of these is his critique of the claim that advertising coerces people into acting against their best interests. He also finds that the modern economic literature largely supports Harris and Seldon's view that advertising facilitates competition and lowers prices. This new study is an important work for all interested in public policy as well as for those studying marketing in business schools or as part of a professional qualification.
