"Memories of a Distant Star" is a collection of short stories woven around the theme of love invoking a wide range of emotions; happiness, sadness, fear, inspiration, disgust, exhilaration, depression, anger. The subtitle of the book "Love Stories from Heaven and Hell" aptly convey the idea that relationships sometimes are gentle and heartwarming while at other times they can be brutal and heart-wrenching. The stories cover varied aspects of life such as family, war, religion, culture, sex, sexual orientation, handicap, mental illness, politics, philosophy, and provide a realistic portrait of the human condition. Although set in many different countries with diverse cultures they, in essence, are about people who are the same when it comes to everyday struggles and joys of life. They are also about ideas, primarily in defiance of failed traditional values such as the ones based on religious dogma, social control, and political expediency.

"The Devils and The Damned' is a gripping war story, suspenseful and thrilling, anchored in realism. The leaders of the opposing forces are Schultz, a death-row prisoner who is also the Regional Commander of a white supremacist organization 'Aryan Vision', and Karcher, the prison warden. The war is fought in the homes, streets, canyons, mountain tops, and the prison. In the midst of this mayhem emerge Satya, the widow of a prison psychiatrist and Haney, a onetime intellectual AV operative, who refuse to kill and are willing to die without a fight. The iconoclastic novel asserts that man is essentially a violent creature; that all wars are between evil and evil; that whoever wins just declares himself to be good; that those who try to promote peace are promptly crushed by the warmongers. Yet, a case is made for non-violence, because it is the only hope for the mankind. Written by a prison psychologist, the novel is truthful although fictionalized.

VISHWAROOP is a collection of 20 short stories about the face of man within the universe. The portrait of man, complex, diverse. Like a tapestry woven with multitudinous threads. Sometimes saddening, infuriating, revolting, frightening, at other times uplifting, calming, happy, hopeful; but always interesting, entertaining, even hilarious. Within it we see a kaleidoscope of images, all different, all fascinating, even enlightening, a jumble we call life. A lot of content is adult oriented, uninhibited, not only sexually but also philosophically, politically, socially, and any other way imaginable. The stories are entertaining, but they are thought provoking, too. They are filled with philosophical musings, many of them are unconventional. If you like a take on man and the universe which is exasperatingly, even inflamingly, different from what a lot of our religious, political, and social leaders have been presenting for thousands of years, then this book is for you. VISHWAROOP is a Sanskrit word with philosophical connotations. It refers to the cosmology and the place of man within the cosmic structure. The concept of God is not posited. While filled with philosophical ideas, it is not a book on philosophy. It is fun fiction. Man is presented in realistic form, in his stark nakedness, the way he really is, not the way we wish him to be. Although fiction, it is not fantasy. Realism does not mean dull. Once started on a story, you may not be able to put it down. And once you have put it down, you will start to think. The characters, the settings, and the ideas within, will linger in your mind, for days, months, even years. So, take a plunge, and you might find yourself enjoying a very different kind of universe, submerged in reality, not dogma.

Among the success stories of economic development through hi-tech industries, the emergence of India as a major center in the world for software production and exports stands out. This is a fascinating story of economic development in a poor and technologically underdeveloped economy that surged to prominence within a relatively short period of less than two decades. The industry has sustained annual growth rates in excess of 35% for over 15 years since the early 1990s, when the country embarked upon an ambitious economic reforms program. However, within the country, the growth of this industry has been highly uneven, with the southern and the western regions leading the rest of the country. This trend has drawn attention to the role of regional policies in the development of this industry. Investigating these issues in depth will help us understand how the state can play a role in propelling an economy forward. The book also compares the different ways in which three states in southern India have established their software industries, illuminating the multiple pathways that are available to developing regions for industrial development, as well as how they affect the type and structure of the industry that evolve. In this first comprehensive study of the role of regional policies in the development of software industry in India, Rajendra Kumar explains the success of these states in terms of four critical factors: availability of adequate skilled labor and specialized infrastructure, pro-employer labor and policy reforms, ethnic linkages of immigrant professionals abroad who returned to establish firms in their native states, and their existing technological capabilities at the beginning of reforms. Contrary to common explanations in the literature, the state did not play a significant role in providing specialized R&D or finance to the industry. He also presents a new "Competitive Flexibility" model and shows that increasing globalization presents tremendous opportunities for developing regions to become globally competitive in a hi-tech field. This is an important book for all scholars and policy makers interested in economic development through high-technology-based industries.
