L'admirable mouvement scientifique qui a marqué la première moitié de ce siècle a ouvert tout un monde nouveau aux recherches des historiens et des philologues. A côté de l'antiquité classique, que l'on connaissait seule jusqu'alors, l'Orient s'est révélé avec la richesse et la variété infinie de ses langues et de ses civilisations. Couronnant l'expédition d'Egypte, les travaux de Champollion vinrent jeter un jour inattendu sur l'ancien empire des Pharaons, dont les monuments nous font remonter jusqu'à plus de quatre mille ans avant notre ère. Quelques années plus tard, les découvertes de Botta et de Layard dans les ruines de Ninive ouvraient des horizons non moins étendus du côté de l'antiquité assyrienne et chaldéenne. Mais c'est l'Inde, surtout, qui parut une véritable révélation aux hommes du commencement de notre siècle. Avec les Védas et la civilisation hindoue, ils croyaient toucher aux origines mêmes de l'humanité. La contrée vers laquelle les reportaient ces textes antiques n'était-elle pas ce plateau de l'Asie centrale, que l'on doit sans doute considérer comme le berceau des races qui ont peuplé le monde civilisé ? Et, de ce point idéal, la civilisation hindoue avait lancé des ramifications dans toutes les directions: c'était d'abord tout le grand développement brahmanique qui est sorti de la religion des Védas, et est, encore aujourd'hui, maître de la plus grande partie de l'Hindoustan; puis, plus au sud, le bouddhisme, dont le centre principal a longtemps été l'île de Ceylan, d'où il s'est répandu jusqu'en Chine; enfin, au nord, la Perse et l'ancienne civilisation iranienne, soeur de celle de l'Inde...
