" De nouveaux mémoires d'Horace Walpole, publiés à Londres, doivent fixer l'attention, surtout si on les rapproche de quelques publications récentes qui ont trait à la même époque et qui renferment de curieux documents. La vie d'Horace Walpole, vie oisive, que tout le monde connaît, ne mérite guère d'être rappelée. Il naquit en 1712, du mariage contracté entre un gentilhomme campagnard, membre du parlement, et la petite-fille d'un lord-maire nommé Shorter; élevé à Éton pendant que son père montait péniblement les degrés de la vie politique, il fit son tour d'Europe comme tout bon gentilhomme anglais, et revint assister comme spectateur ironique et attentif, sans vouloir jamais s'y mêler activement, au drame de la chambre des communes. Cette attitude d'observation dura jusqu'à sa mort, survenue en 1787, et lui obit une existence calme et détestée. Personne n'a été plus décrié de son vivant, plus vivement attaqué par ses ennemis, plus mal défendu par ses amis: on ne pouvait souffrir son impertinence froide et son ricanement perpétuel..."

Coleridge et l'Écossaise Joanna Baillie ont tout-à-fait échoué dans leur prétention de substituer l'analyse des idées au mouvement des caractères..."
