HATEF OF ISFAHAN AND HIS FAMOUS TARJI-BAND Translation & Introduction Paul Smith "Hatef won fame by his unsurpassed Tarji-band, a work that sings of a mystical vision, albeit with all the conventional erotic and wine-house accessories, but in an uncommonly straightforward style, in a lucidly arranged metaphorical language intensified to the highest degree of perception, free of the euphuisms and obscurities of the foregoing period. Here we have one of the best examples of Persian poetry in the 12th/18th century and one that at the same time stands on an incomparably higher level than anything else this poet produced." Jan Rypka. "Hatef of Isfahan was a great Sufi, who wrote in both Arabic and Persian. He was especially celebrated as a writer of ghazals and was the author of a famous poem of recurring lines (tarji-band). He writes as a lover of God and uses the imagery of wine of the Divine Love which brings rapture and ecstasy to those who receive it." Margaret Smith. Here is a translation in the correct form, with the beauty and meaning of this great poem revealed. BHAGAVAD GITA OF VYASA (Large Print & Large Format Edition) Translation & Introduction Paul Smith. The life of the author Vyasa (approximately 200 B.C.) is fascinating. He was the author of and a character in the second great poetic epic of India the Mahabharata. He is responsible for classifying the four Vedas, and wrote the eighteen Puranas. The Mahabharata is often called as the fifth Veda. The most important section is the Bhagavad Gita, the lesson recited to Arjuna by Krishna on the battlefield. He was born on an island on the holy river Yamuna. His father was Parashar Rishi, a sage, and his mother was Satyavati. He taught the Vedas to his pupils with much devotion and dedication. He received knowledge from great sages like Vasudeva and Sanakadik. He described that the most important goal in one's life is to attain God-Realization. Apart from the Mahabharata he also composed the Brahmasootra, one of the shortest theologies on Hindu philosophy. The context of the Gita is a conversation between Lord Krishna and the Pandava prince Arjuna taking place in the middle of the battlefield before the start of the Kurukshetra War with armies on both sides ready to battle. Responding to Arjuna's confusion and moral dilemma about fighting his own cousins who command a tyranny imposed on a disputed empire, Lord Krishna explains to Arjuna his duties as a warrior and prince, and elaborates on different Bhakti & Yoga philosophies, and explains different ways in which the soul can reach the supreme being with examples and analogies. This has led to the Gita often being described as a concise guide to Bhakti (Hindu Mysticism) and also as a practical, self-contained guide to life in poetic form. Revised into modern English from 'The Geeta' Trans. by Purohit Swami First published by Faber & Faber Limited 1935. Large Print (16pt) & Large Format (8" x 10") Edition. 180 pages. Paul Smith (b. 1945) is a poet, author and translator of many books of Sufi poets from the Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, Pashtu, Hindi and other languages including Hafiz, Sadi, Nizami, Rumi, 'Attar, Sana'i, Jahan Khatun, Obeyd Zakani, Mu'in, Amir Khusrau, Nesimi, Kabir, Anvari, Ansari, Jami, Khayyam, Rudaki, Lalla Ded, Mahsati, Baba Farid, Iqbal, Vrind, Rahim and others, and his own poetry, fiction, biographies, plays, children's books and 12 screenplays.

DADU DAYAL Bhakti Poet/Saint of India. Translation & Introduction Paul Smith. Dadu Dayal (1544-1603) was a Bhakti poet/saint from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. 'Dadu' means brother and 'Dayal' means 'the compassionate one'. He was found by an affluent businessman floating on the river Sabarmati. He later moved to Amer near Jaipur Rajasthan, where he gathered around himself a group of followers, forming a sect that became known as the Dadu-panth. Dadu's compositions were recorded by his disciple Rajjab and are known as the Dadu Anubhav Vani, a compilation of 5,000 couplets, many of them bhajans and dohas. Dadu spent the latter years of his life in Naraiana. Five ashrams are considered sacred by the followers: Naraiana, Bhairanaji, Sambhar, Amer, and Karadala (Kalyanpura). He was born in 1544, and died in 1603. He made his living by sewing skins into bags for raising water from wells, until eventually he was initiated into the religious life by the sadhu Sundardas. Dadu had no book-learning but his natural genius and the vision gained by his devotion made him a lover of beauty and a poet. JIGAR MORADABADI: SELECTED POEMS Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Ali Sikander Moradabadi (takhallus, Jigar... meaning 'heart or liver') was born in Moradabad in Uttar Pradash, India. If one talks of later Urdu ghazal... the cream of poets is Jigar, the 'Prince of the Urdu ghazal!' Jigar was admired and read by many and his works launched him into a realm of his own, he was more popular than princes and regents. He had a large following among the ordinary people. His fame transcended religious and language barriers. Although his poetry was in Urdu, his works were loved in the Hindu and Muslim communities. Although his poems are in the traditional ghazal form, he was considered modern and he is believed to have reinvigorated the Urdu ghazal. He was a great admirer of beauty and painted a living picture of it in his ghazals, but not stopping at that, his description of beauty carries one to a different timeless place where Eternal Beauty reigns supreme. This is true Sufism. This is the largest translation of his poems in English and the only one keeping the correct rhyme structure of the originals. Introduction on his Life, Times & Poetry and on Urdu Poetry & The Ghazal in Urdu Poetry, Selected Bibliography. 156 pages. Inayat Khan "Hafiz defies you to show him or put him in a condition inopportune or ignoble... He fears nothing. He sees too far; he sees throughout; such is the only man I wish to see or be." Emerson "Hafiz is highly esteemed by his countrymen as Shakespeare by us, and deserves as serious consideration." A.J. Arberry"There is no equal to Hafiz in poetry. He was a Perfect Master... His Divan is the best book in the world because it engenders feelings which ultimately lead to illumination." Meher Baba "It is as if his mental eye, endowed with wonderful acuteness of vision, had penetrated into provinces of thought which we of a later age were destined to inhabit." Gertrude Bell "Hafiz breathes originality in all his works ... in no other country, was ever born a genius so rare. He dwells on the degeneracy of his age, on the vanity of the world on universal charity, and on toleration and liberty of conscience." H. Wilberforce Clarke "We may state, without incurring the danger of modernization, that in these ghazals Hafiz applied quite consciously and consistently a method of revealing his hero's inner condition at which European literature first arrived only in the 20th century." Michael J. Zand "The best Musician of Words." Edward Fitzgerald (Translator of Omar Khayyam's Rubaiyyat.) "...sublime amorous ghazals." Lorca "Only the most enlightened of beings can benefit from the deepest human joys because within such beings resides a unique force of freedom and rapture. Their awareness rests in the house of spirit and their soul mates with their awareness, meaning that which is discovered through awareness emanates from their soul and that which shines in the soul is known with awareness. This unity of spirit and mind is the legacy of Hafiz." Nietzsche. Comments on Paul Smith's Translation of Hafiz's 'Divan'. 'It is not a joke.
