Bøger af Parmenides

With PARMENIDES began what is called, in more specific terms, true Philosophy. The Eleatic, and his Poem, constitute a "beacon" whose light illumined Plato and even Aristotle, and consequently all the philosophers that followed. Parmenides laid down several fundamental philosophical principles: 1. The Being as foundation of all the existent 2. The principle of identity, Being is identical to itself 3. The principle of non-contradiction 4. The principle of a-temporality or eternal present 5. An initiatory philosophical vision of an experimental order This vision was taken up by Plato and others down to Plotinus and beyond, while staying in the Classical Greek tradition.

Forlaget Valville udgiver, som den første bog i en ny serie med klassiske temaer, to af filosofihistoriens allerførste, ret præcist 2500 år gamle, hovedværker i ny dansk oversættelse. Det drejer sig om de forliste værker af de græske filosoffer Heraklit og Parmenides, der i mere end 2000 år kun har været tilgængelige som en spredt mængde af usammenhængende ”fragmenter”. Oversætter og kommentator, idéhistoriker lic. phil. Kasper Nefer Olsen, har påtaget sig den opgave at samle disse til en rekonstruktion – så vidt muligt – af hvorledes disse tidlige filosofiske traktater oprindeligt fremstod, i deres helhed. De to tekster supplerer hinanden på mange måder. Heraklit taler om Altings uophørlige forandring; Parmenides om det Ene som altid forbliver sig selv. Heraklit skriver prosa; Parmenides bruger stadig den samme verseform som Homer: hexameteret, – her omhyggeligt gendigtet på dansk, med en indledende forklaring af versemålet. For begge gælder at den oprindelige titel ikke er overleveret med sikkerhed; men Heraklit synes at bruge det samme ord om sit værk som om tanken i det hele taget, nemlig SAMLING (som når vi på dansk siger ”sans og samling”), og for Parmenides er erkendelsens veje og vildveje en så gennemgående metafor at VÆRENS VEJE synes et forsvarligt valg af titel. Oversættelsen er forsynet med omhyggelig angivelse af hvorledes hvert enkelt af de her arkæo-logisk genforenede ”potteskår” er nummereret i Hermann Diels' autoritative referenceværk Fragmente der Vorsokratiker (1903), og derudover med en række filologiske og filosofiske fodnoter, samt introduktioner til forfatterne og deres historiske og geografiske kontekst.

Parmenides and Empedocles, along with Heraclitus the most important of the pre-Socratic philosophers, were at the same time among the greatest poets of the ancient world. But their work is rarely treated and still more rarely translated in its original form--as poetry. The complete extant fragments of Parmenides and Empedocles are collected here for the first time in a translation responsive to the original verse texts.Parmenides'' philosophical fragments are here given as the poetic remains of the thinker from Elea in Southern Italy whom Socrates wondered at and Plato held in awe.
