Es entspricht der allgemeinen Vertiefung der historischen Studien, wenn heute auch auf dem Gebiete der deutschen Schulgeschichte eine ausgebreitete und intensive Tätigkeit herrscht, die ebensowohl auf die Sammlung des seiner ganzen Natur nach unendlich zer­ streuten Materials wie auf die Bearbeitung irgendwelches Zweiges gerichtet ist. Eine solche zusammenfassende Darstellung auf einem beschränkten Gebiet möchte die vorliegende Arbeit bieten, nicht die Geschichte einer einzelnen Schule, auch nicht die Schul­ geschichte einer ganzen Landschaft oder einer Periode, wohl aber einer größeren Stadt. Seine Rechtfertigung findet dieser Versuch nicht nur in der Veranstaltung des ganzen Unternehmens, von dem sie ein bescheidener Teil ist, sondern auch vor allem in der Natur seines Stoffes. Denn die alte Handels-und Universitätsstadt Leipzig hat seit Luthers Reformation ihr gesamtes Schulwesen selbständig, ohne Beihilfe des Staats unter eigenem Patronat ausgebildet, zuerst die Lateinschule, seit dem Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts auch die lange völlig der Privattätigkeit überlassene Volksschule, an die an­ schließend im zweiten Viertel des 19. Jahrhunderts die Realschule neben die Handelsschule der Kaufmannschaft trat. Wenn die Auf­ gabe, diese Entwicklung, die eine ungewöhnlich starke Stadtseele verrät, zu schildern, gewiß an sich lohnend ist, so bot sie auch manche Schwierigkeiten. Denn die brauchbaren Vorarbeiten ge­ nügen nur auf dem Gebiete des verhältnismäßig jungen Volksschul­ wesens; für das viel ältere höhere Schulwesen gibt es solche nur für einzelne Abschnitte; dazwischen klaffen breite Lücken. Also mußte so viel wie möglich auf die Quellen zurückgegangen werden. Diese aber sind zum Teil lückenhaft und sehr verschiedenartig.
