Emerson delineates himself so perfectly in his various writings that the careful reader sees his nature just as it was in all its essentials, and has little more to learn than those human accidents which individualize him in space & time. About all these accidents we have a natural & pardonable curiosity. We wish to know of what race he came, what were the conditions in which he was born, what educational & social influences helped to mold his character, and what new elements nature added to make him Ralph Waldo Emerson.

1862. A collection of verse from the American author, physician and father of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. He turned from a career as a general practitioner to the academic. He was also a contributor to the Atlantic Monthly (which he named), penning the famous series of Breakfast-table sketches, which are imaginary conversations at a Boston boardinghouse and reflective of Holmes's opinions, charm, and wit. He began writing poetry when he was attending college at Cambridge. His first important poem, Old Ironsides, was a protest against the scrapping of the fighting ship Constitution.
