1879. Other volumes in this set include ISBN number(s): 0766165981. Volume 1 of 2. The natural world is overlaid by an unnatural religion, breeding bitterness around simplest thoughts, obstructions to science, estrangements not more reasonable than if they resulted from varying notions of lunar figures, all derived from the Devil-bequeathed dogma that certain beliefs and disbeliefs are of infernal instigation. Dogmas molded in a fossil demonology make the foundation of institutions which divert wealth, learning, enterprise, to fictitious ends. It was not, therefore, mere intellectual curiosity which kept Mr. Conway working at this subject for many years, but an increasing conviction that the sequelae of such superstitions were exercising a formidable influence. If everyone busied himself with the Devil as Mr. Conway did, the kingdom of God would gain by it. It was with this sentiment in mind that Mr. Conway presents this work to the public. Due to the age and scarcity of the original we reproduced, some pages may be spotty, faded or difficult to read.

Paine's immensely popular and influential pamphlet Common Sense helped inspire the American colonists. Of Paine John Adams said, "Without the pen of the author of Common Sense, the sword of Washington would have been raised in vain." The Rights of Man" was in part a defense of the French Revolution. And in The Age of Reason Paine gives his views on religion. "Part of Paine's work was to render complex ideas intelligible to average readers of the day, with clear, concise writing unlike the formal, learned style favored by many of Paine's contemporaries." The Writings of Thomas Paine: The Age of Reason by Thomas Paine. The Age of Reason; Being an Investigation of True and Fabulous Theology is a work by English and American political activist Thomas Paine, arguing for the philosophical position of Deism. It follows in the tradition of eighteenth-century British deism, and challenges institutionalized religion and the legitimacy of the Bible. It was published in three parts in 1794, 1795, and 1807. IN the opening year, 1793, when revolutionary France had beheaded its king, the wrath turned next upon the King of kings, by whose grace every tyrant claimed to reign. But eventualities had brought among them a great English and American heart-Thomas Paine. He had pleaded for Louis Caper-"Kill the king but spare the man." Now he pleaded, -"Disbelieve in the King of kings, but do not confuse with that idol the Father of Mankind!". In Paine's Preface to the Second Part of "The Age of Reason" he describes himself as writing the First Part near the close of the year 1793. "I had not finished it more than six hours, in the state it has since appeared, before a guard came about three in the morning, with an order signed by the two Committees of Public Safety and Surety General, for putting me in arrestation."

The American Crisis - Thomas Paine - Collected and Edited by Moncure Daniel Conway The American Crisis is a pamphlet series by 18th century Enlightenment philosopher and author Thomas Paine, originally published from 1776 to 1783 during the American Revolution. Often known as The American Crisis or simply The Crisis, there are sixteen pamphlets in total. Thirteen numbered pamphlets were published between 1776 and 1777, with three additional pamphlets released between 1777 and 1783. The first of the pamphlets were published in Pennsylvania Journal. Paine signed the pamphlets with the pseudonym, "Common Sense." The pamphlets were contemporaneous with early parts of the American Revolution, during a time when colonists needed inspiring works. Paine, like many other politicians and scholars, knew that the Colonists weren't going to support the American Revolutionary War without proper reason to do so. They were written in a language that the common man could understand, and represented Paine's liberal philosophy. Paine also used references to God, saying that a war against Kingdom of Great Britain would be a war with the support of God. Paine's writings bolstered the morale of the American colonists, appealed to the English people's consideration of the war with America, clarified the issues at stake in the war, and denounced the advocates of a negotiated peace. The first volume begins with the famous words "These are the times that try men's souls."
