Pero yo, que aunque parezco padre soy padrastro de Don Quijote, no quiero irme con la corriente del uso, ni suplicarte casi con las lagrimas en los ojos, como otros hacen, lector carisimo, que perdones o disimules las faltas que en este mi jijo vieres: y pues ni eres so pariente ni su amigo, y tienes tu alma en tu cuerpo y to libre albedrio como el mas pintado, y estas en tu casa, donde eres senor della, como el rey de sus alcahalas, y sabes lo que comunmente se dice, que debajo de mi mante al rey mato, todo lo cual te exenta y hace libre de todo respeto y obligacion, puedes decir de la historia todo aquello que te pareciere, sin temor que te calunien por el mal, ni te premien el bien que dijeres della. Solo quisiera dartela monda y desnuda, sin el ornato de prologo, ni de la inumerabilidad y catalogo de los acostumbrados sonetos, epigramas y elogios que al principio de los libros suelen ponerse. Porque te se decir que aunque me costo algun trabajo componerla, ninjuno tuve por mayor que hacer esta prefacion que vas leyendo. El Quijote narra la historia de un hidalgo manchego, de unos cincuenta años, que se vuelve loco por leer muchos libros de caballerías. El protagonista llega a creer que las narraciones caballerescas relatan sucesos reales, y decide salir de su aldea en busca de aventuras similares a las de sus héroes literarios con el objetivo de. En su mente, confunde la realidad y la literatura: así, la venta de un camino le parecerá un castillo; los molinos serán gigantes, y los rebaños se transformarán en ejércitos de conocidos caballeros. En su aventura arrastra a un campesino simple y recordete de nombre Sancho Panza, quien a veces de convierte en figura central de una de las aventuras más leídas de todos los tiempos.

En la venta del Molinillo, que está puesta en los fines de los famosos campos de Alcudia, como vamos de Castilla a la Andalucía, un día de los calurosos del verano, se hallaron en ella a caso dos muchachos de hasta edad de catorce a quince años; el uno, ni el otro no pasaban de diez y siete, ambos de buena gracia, pero muy descosidos, rotos y maltratados; capa no la tenían; los calzones eran de lienzo, y las medias de carne. Bien es verdad que lo enmendaban los zapatos, porque los del uno eran alpargates, tan traídos como llevados, y los del otro picados y sin suelas, de manera que más le servían de cormas que de zapatos.
