We have thousands of titles available, and we invite you to search for us by name, contact us via our website, or download our most recent catalogues. I offer here some of the essays that I have written in the course of the past ten years. While I was collecting them and (quite patiently) reading them again, I found that a few of them were in direct reference to the moments at which they were severally composed. It was clear that these must have their dates affixed to them. And for sake of uniformity I have dated all the others, and, doing so, have thought I need not exclude all such topical remarks as in them too were uttered, nor throw into a past tense such of those remarks as I have retained. Perhaps a book of essays ought to seem as if it had been written a few days before publication. On the other hand-but this is a Note, not a Preface. M.B. Rapallo, 1920.

There, on that October evening-there, in that exuberant vista of gilding and crimson velvet set amidst all those opposing mirrors and upholding caryatids, with fumes of tobacco ever rising to the painted and pagan ceiling, and with the hum of presumably cynical conversation broken into so sharply now and again by the clatter of dominoes shuffled on marble tables, I drew a deep breath and, "This indeed," said I to myself, "is life!" (Forgive me that theory. Remember the waging of even the South African War was not yet.) It was the hour before dinner. We drank vermuth. Those who knew Rothenstein were pointing him out to those who knew him only by name.

If I were 'seeing over' a house, and found in every room an iron cage let into the wall, and were told by the caretaker that these cages were for me to keep lions in, I think I should open my eyes rather wide. Yet nothing seems to me more natural than a fire in the grate. Doubtless, when I began to walk, one of my first excursions was to the fender, that I might gaze more nearly at the live thing roaring and raging behind it; and I dare say I dimly wondered by what blessed dispensation this creature was allowed in a domain so peaceful as my nursery. I do not think I ever needed to be warned against scaling the fender. I knew by instinct that the creature within it was dangerous-fiercer still than the cat which had once strayed into the room and scratched me for my advances. As I grew older, I ceased to wonder at the creature's presence and learned to call it 'the fire, ' quite lightly. There are so many queer things in the world that we have no time to go on wondering at the queerness of the things we see habitually. It is not that these things are in themselves less queer than they at first seemed to us. It is that our vision of them has been dimmed. We are lucky when by some chance we see again, for a fleeting moment, this thing or that as we saw it when it first came within our ken. We are in the habit of saying that 'first impressions are best, ' and that we must approach every question 'with an open mind'; but we shirk the logical conclusion that we were wiser in our infancy than we are now. 'Make yourself even as a little child' we often say, but recommending the process on moral rather than on intellectual grounds, and inwardly preening ourselves all the while on having 'put away childish things, ' as though clarity of vision were not one of the

143,95 kr. Zuleika Dobson is a deliciously absurd book, simultaneously outrageously funny and simply outrageous. It is also a book that could perhaps only have been written when it was, after the end of the Victorian Age but immediately before the horrors of WW I. It is almost impossible to imagine a comedy about a woman who so enchants the students in the colleges of Oxford University that they are inspired to commit suicide en masse appearing after the horrors of the Great War. Only ten years after it appeared, it would have been impossible for it to get published. As it is, it stands as one of the last mementos of the pre-War era. Zuleika Dobson is not for everyone: though it is farce, it is not broad farce. Much of the humor lies in the subtlety of the language and one lacking the ear to appreciate the wit is going to be left rather cold. Regardless, it is one of the more deliciously written novels of the past century. It is also one of the sillier books ever written, and intentionally so. The remarkable thing is that Zuleika herself, whose fault is that she can only fall in love with someone who scarcely notices her and fails to love anyone who in turn loves her, is written as a terribly uninteresting person. She is a stage performer, gaining fame with an amateurish magic act with equipment she stole from a previous admirer, yet she never really charms the reader as she ought. This, of course, makes the manner in which she bewitches all of Oxford even more wonderfully absurd. Throughout it all Beerbohm plays one delightful game after another. For instance, when someone comments on Zuleika's style of speech, she admits to copying from one Max Beerbohm, beside whom she sat at some dinner. Beerbohm also deals wonderfully with the issue of authorial point of view. Around this time the omniscient narrator was taking quite a beating from critics, so Beerbohm makes himself explicitly omnipresent as the result of an encounter with the muse Clio, who makes him temporarily a disembodied spirit, able to enter any space unhindered and unobserved and able to invade even the thoughts of others. There really isn't another book quite like Zuleika Dobson. Fans of Three Men in a Boat might find some resemblance between the two, but even here the resemblance is remote. Best just to read it as what it truly is: one of the most unique comic novels ever written.

88,95 kr. Lord George called for port and champagne and beckoned the bowing homuncule to his box, that he might compliment him on his skill and pledge him in a bumper of the grape. "On my soul, you have a genius for the bow," his Lordship cried with florid condescension. "Come and sit by me; but first let me present you to my divine companion the Signora Gambogi-Virgo and Sagittarius, egad! You may have met on the Zodiac." "Indeed, I met the Signora many years ago," the Dwarf replied, with a low bow. "But not on the Zodiac, and the Signora perhaps forgets me." At this speech the Signora flushed angrily, for she was indeed no longer young, and the Dwarf had a childish face. She thought he mocked her; her eyes flashed. Lord George's twinkled rather maliciously. "Great is the experience of youth," he laughed. "Pray, are you stricken with more than twenty summers?" "With more than I can count," said the Dwarf.

88,95 - 153,95 kr. Have you ever met a woman so beautiful you knew instinctively you would die for her? The Duke of Dorset, one of the many undergrads at Oxford University, sees as his only option committing suicide to prove his love for the astonishingly attractive Zuleika Dobson. A witty and engaging satire which pokes fun at the Edwardian upperclass college experience, Max Beerbohm's Zuleika Dobson makes all too plain the dangers of growing up wealthy and emotionally detached, while showing that when you place a high premium on aesthetics at the most impressionable time in one's life, the results really are "to die for."

A Christmas Garland, Woven - A Collection of Seventeen Parodies by Max Beerbohm - A Christmas Garland, Woven by Max Beerbohm is a collection of seventeen parodies written by English caricaturist, essayist and parodist Max Beerbohm. It was first published in the United Kingdom in October 1912 by Heinemann and in 1918 in the United States by Dutton & Co. of New York. Beerbohm had a gift for parody, and A Christmas Garland is perhaps the best collection of parodies ever written in English. In his book Beerbohm parodied the style of popular writers of his day. These were Henry James, George Bernard Shaw, Thomas Hardy, Joseph Conrad, Rudyard Kipling, H. G. Wells, George Meredith, John Galsworthy, G. K. Chesterton, George Moore, Edmund Gosse, Maurice Hewlett, Hilaire Belloc, G. S. Street, Arnold Bennett, Frank Harris, and A. C. Benson. Beerbohm's parodies of their work are intermixed with a Christmas theme and the inventiveness of his own comic talents. When A Christmas Garland first appeared in 1912 reviewers agreed that Beerbohm had not only captured the styles or "externals" of his subjects but had "unbared their brains and hearts". He seemed to have obtained "temporary loans of their very minds," from which he "worked outwards to the perfect jest." Henry James, the first author parodied, read A Christmas Garland with "wonder and delight" and called the book "the most intelligent that has been produced in England for many a long day."
