Born with athetoid cerebral palsy, she graduated from Roger Williams University, majoring in architectural studies. With limited fine motor control in her hands, Maureen uses a headpointer to type. In 2015, she received the prestigious Courage of Conscience Award from The Peace Abbey in Millis, Massachusetts for her strong advocacy work for people with developmental disabilities. In her spare time, Maureen loves to compose music-a lifelong passion.

Don't call me inspiring. Just call me a woman with athetoid cerebral palsy. My muscles don't function properly, but that doesn't mean I can't play a guitar. My speech might be difficult to understand, but it doesn't mean I have lesser intellect. My disability doesn't define me; it never will. What does define me is my love for my family and friends, my passion to compose incredible music, and my fire to have a place in this world to create change where the collective population will some day people with disabilities as people who are just people who bodies and minds are unique. This is my personal journey.

The designs concepts in this illustrated book are to promote the independence of people with disabilities. With the ingenuity and drive, there could be endless possibilities for devising any object to give people more independence. These design concepts only touch the surface.
