Lysias levede fra 445-380 f.Kr. Han var ikke athensk borger, men var bosat i Athen det meste af sit liv. Under De Tredive Tyranner (404-403 f.Kr.) mistede han sin hele formue. Han støttede den demokratiske revolution i 403 f.Kr., men blev ikke belønnet med borgerret. Han levede derfor som metøk og ernærede sig som logograf, dvs. ved at skrive taler for andre til brug ved folkedomstolen. Lysias´ Taler er et udvalg af nogle af Lysias´ mest interessante taler. Vil man fornemme livet, som det var i oldtidens Athen, er Lysias´ taler det bedste, man kan læse. De er tilmed skrevet med et stilistisk mesterskab, der gør læsningen til en ren fornøjelse. Særligt fascinerende er hans evne til at skabe en personlighed til taleren, der får hans argumenter til at virke indlysende. Ethopoiia kaldte de antikke dette, og Lysias betragtedes som uovertruffen i ethopoiia.
