88,95 - 118,95 kr. Slavery existed long before the United States of America was founded, but so did opposition to slavery. Both flourished after the founding of the country, and the anti-slavery movement was known as abolition. For many abolitionists, slavery was the preeminent moral issue of the day, and their opposition to slavery was rooted in deeply held religious beliefs. Quakers formed a significant part of the abolitionist movement in colonial times, as did certain Founding Fathers like Benjamin Franklin. Many other prominent opponents of slavery based their opposition in Enlightenment ideals and natural law. Lydia Maria Child was an American abolitionist and Women's rights activist. Her journals, fiction and domestic manuals reached wide audiences from the 1820s through the 1850s. She at times shocked her audience, as she tried to take on issues of both male dominance and white supremacy in some of her stories. After reading the writing of William Lloyd Garrison, she and her husband became ardent abolitionists. After the end of the Civil War, she compiled these stories and biographies into a single volume as a book of role models for the newly emancipated slaves.

"Published in Boston in 1833, Lydia Maria Child's An Appeal in Favor of That Class of Americans Called Africans provided the abolitionist movement with its first full-scale analysis of race and enslavement. Controversial in its own time, the Appeal surveyed the institution of slavery from historical, political, economic, legal, racial, and moral perspectives and advocated for the immediate emancipation of the enslaved without compensation to their enslavers. By placing American slavery in historical context and demonstrating how slavery impacted--and implicated--Americans of all regions and races, the Appeal became a central text for the abolitionist movement that continues to resonate in the present day. This revised and updated edition is enhanced by Carolyn L. Karcher's illuminating introduction, a chronology of Child's life, and a list of books for further reading"--

316,95 - 478,95 kr. ""A Romance of the Republic"" is a novel written by Lydia Maria Child, first published in 1867. The story is set during the tumultuous years leading up to the American Civil War and follows the lives of two young lovers, David Lee and Ellen Murray. David is a wealthy young man from the North who is deeply committed to the abolitionist cause, while Ellen is a beautiful and spirited Southern belle who is torn between her loyalty to her family and her growing love for David. As tensions between the North and South escalate, David and Ellen find themselves caught up in the midst of the conflict, facing challenges and dangers that threaten to tear them apart. Through their struggles, the novel explores themes of love, loyalty, and the struggle for freedom and justice in a divided nation. Child's novel is a powerful and moving portrayal of the complex social and political issues that shaped American history in the mid-19th century, and it remains a classic of American literature today.Mr. Fitzgerald lingered on the wharf till the vessel containing his treasure was no longer visible. Then he returned to the carriage, and was driven to his hotel. Notwithstanding a day of very unusual excitement and fatigue, when he retired to rest he felt no inclination to sleep. Rosabella floated before him as he had first seen her, a radiant vision of beauty surrounded by flowers. He recalled the shy pride and maidenly modesty with which she had met his ardent glances and impassioned words. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
