La trama de Las paces de los reyes y judía de Toledo, de Lope de Vega, se resume en lo siguiente:Una familia judía de la España de Alfonso VIII es desterrada por éste de la ciudad de Toledo. Hacia 1270, la Crónica General de Alfonso X el Sabio alude por primera vez a un episodio de la vida de Alfonso VIII (1155-1214): quien en 1170, recién casado con Leonor de Aquitania, se enamoró de una judía de Toledo, Raquel, la Fermosa, y se encerró con ella durante casi siete años, olvidando a su legítima mujer y su reino.En consecuencia, los nobles de la Corte decidieron matar a la judía.Este argumento ha sido tratado también, entre otros, porLorenzo de Sepúlveda en la Romanza (1551),Antonio Mira de Amescua,Luis de Ulloa y Pereyra,Juan Bautista Diamantey García de la Huerta (1772).

Lope de Vega escribió en el año 1609 uno de los textos que revolucionaron el panorama teatral y literario del Siglo de Oro: El arte nuevo de hacer comedias en este tiempo. Es un ensayo que recopila las bases de cómo hacer teatro en el siglo XVII. En aquellos tiempos la comedia no se concebía como en la actualidad, sino que era la definición por excelencia del arte dramático.El arte nuevo de hacer comedias en este tiempo es un texto en verso que Lope de Vega leyó en la Academia de Madrid, en 1609.Se trata de una obra de encargo donde el autor, a lo largo de 389 versos. Hace una confesión de sus logros y fracasos con la finalidad de defender su manera de entender el teatro ante los académicos. Útil para entender qué distingue al teatro clásico español del inglés o el francés.Lope intenta defender un teatro basado en el gusto de la época, interpretando los gustos, sentimientos y valores del público. En este sentido, el gusto de ese público se convierte en la vara de medir el valor de las obras.En El arte nuevo de hacer comedias en este tiempo, Lope se enfrenta abiertamente a este viejo precepto de las tres unidades respetadas por el teatro clásico. Sobre todo, se niega a respetar las unidades de tiempo y lugar. Para él la acción no puede contenerse en la estrechez de un solo día y un solo lugar.Cuando he de escribir una comedia, encierro los preceptos con seis llaves.También en oposición al teatro más academicista, Lope propone que los argumentos y sus desarrollos sean los que marquen el género de la obra (comedia o tragedia) y no el rango social de sus personajes. Asimismo, propone mezclar estos dos géneros en una misma obra.Lo trágico y lo cómico mezclado... harán grave una parte, otra ridícula, que aquesta variedad deleita mucho: buen ejemplo nos da naturaleza, que por tal variedad tiene belleza.

El mes de enero de 2014, el joven filólogo investigador del grupo Prolope de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) y profesor de la Universitat de Syracuse (EE.UU.) Alejandro García Reidy halló una copia manuscrita de la comedia de Lope de Vega "Mujeres y criados" (1613-1614), que se conservaba en la Biblioteca Nacional de España (BNE), pero se daba por perdida. La obra, que se desarrolla en Madrid, está protagonizada por dos hermanas, Violante y Luciana, y sus galantes, Claridán y Teodoro, un camarero y un secretario del conde Próspero, respectivamente, cuyos amores se ven comprometidos por la aparición de otros dos pretendientes: el mismo conde, que desea a Luciana, y el rico don Pedro, que corteja a Violante con el beneplácito del padre de la dama. La presente edición contiene exclusivamente el texto de dicha obra. Existe una edición crítica publicada por la Editorial Gredos, así como una edición digital en formato pdf en la web de Prolope.
