"De los cantares", una obra alegórica mística de Lope de Vega, es una expresión literaria profunda inspirada en los Evangelios. Ambientada en un paisaje bucólico, la obra se despliega en un valle rodeado de montañas, donde se erige una cabaña dentro de un jardín meticulosamente dispuesto, y, a otro lado, una ciudad amurallada. La pieza se abre con la aparición de la Esposa y la Gracia, vestidas como aldeanas, una elección de vestuario que refleja la simplicidad y la humildad que permea toda la obra.La Esposa, en un acto de oración ferviente, clama por la unión con su esposo divino, una metáfora del alma anhelante por la comunión con Dios. Así implora la presencia física de Cristo, no a través de ángeles o profetas, sino en carne y hueso, humanizado, evocando las profecías de Isaías. Esta súplica representa el deseo profundo de conexión íntima y directa con lo divino, trascendiendo las barreras de lo terrenal.Lope de Vega utiliza la figura de la Esposa para explorar temas de amor místico, redención y purificación espiritual. La auto-referencia de la Esposa como "negra pero hermosa", de un racismo derivado del "Cantar de los Cantares" de la Biblia, simboliza una belleza interior que trasciende el color de la piel, y alude a su origen humilde y su transformación a través de la gracia divina.La obra es un diálogo lírico entre la Esposa y la Gracia, donde la primera expresa su anhelo por una unión espiritual con Cristo, simbolizando el anhelo del alma por la unión con lo divino. La trama de Las paces de los reyes y judía de Toledo, de Lope de Vega, se resume en lo siguiente:Una familia judía de la España de Alfonso VIII es desterrada por éste de la ciudad de Toledo. Hacia 1270, la Crónica General de Alfonso X el Sabio alude por primera vez a un episodio de la vida de Alfonso VIII (1155-1214): quien en 1170, recién casado con Leonor de Aquitania, se enamoró de una judía de Toledo, Raquel, la Fermosa, y se encerró con ella durante casi siete años, olvidando a su legítima mujer y su reino.En consecuencia, los nobles de la Corte decidieron matar a la judía.Este argumento ha sido tratado también, entre otros, porLorenzo de Sepúlveda en la Romanza (1551),Antonio Mira de Amescua,Luis de Ulloa y Pereyra,Juan Bautista Diamantey García de la Huerta (1772).
