Den judiska familjen Oppermann har levt i Berlin i fem generationer. Nu består familjen av syskonen Gustav, Martin, Edgar och Klara. Han kritiserade ofta samtiden i sina romaner och som jude och vänsterorienterad blev Feuchtwanger vid nazisternas maktövertagande 1933 av med sitt tyska medborgarskap. Hans böcker förbjöds och han gick i landsflykt. Han levde under senare delen av sitt liv i USA.
