118,95 kr. This volume consists of a new translation of Leo Tolstoy's, THE GOSPELS IN BRIEF, from the original Russian into contemporary English. After Tolstoy completed A Translation, Harmony, and Analysis of the Gospels, in 1891, he realized that it was hardly beneficial for the general reader due to its complexity and intensity of detail, and so about 10 years later in 1902, he published another volume that consisted of the introductions and summaries of the 12 chapters, under the title of The Gospels in Brief. Tolstoy's approach as a humanist philosopher is to focus on the specific teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, so he was able to uncover the understanding it its correct application. This is why what the world needs is Leo Tolstoy's understanding of the Gospel, and not the one provided by historical or contemporary Christianity, which has failed its founder. Included is also a brief biography of Leo Tolstoy, an analysis of his Christian humanist philosophy, and a description of Russia during his era, so to better understand his purpose, also a selection of passages from some of Tolstoy's other writings.Daniel H. Shubin has translated much of Leo Tolstoy, including War and Peace, The Kingdom of God is within You, Confession, What I Believe, and The Four Gospels, along with other books on Russian history, philosophy and biography.

143,95 kr. War and Peace (1869) is a novel by Russian writer Leo Tolstoy. Serialized between 1865 and 1867, it was published in book form in 1869 and has since been recognized as a masterpiece of world literature. Notable for its epic scale, War and Peace encompasses hundreds of characters, diligently following its five central families across fifteen years while featuring detailed imaginings of such historical figures as Napoleon Bonaparte. In The Epilogues, Tolstoy draws his epic story to a heartwarming close while offering his theory on the philosophy of history. After so much death and destruction, Tolstoy finds solace in the sanctity of marriage and the effort of traumatized people to rebuild and reclaim their lives. As a new generation is born, hope is rekindled, but faint rumblings of unrest and conspiracy suggest that peace, once more, will be difficult to maintain. In the epilogue's second part, Tolstoy breaks from his narrative to offer his theory on the philosophy of history, condemning the popular Great Man Theory's elevation of the individual and proposing that small, singular events form the basis of historical change. With its depiction of the brutalities of war on individuals and society alike, Tolstoy's story brings history to life while reminding us that the past is always closer than we care to think. As ambitious as it is triumphant, Leo Tolstoy's masterpiece is an epic novel of history and family, a story of faith and the will to persevere in the face of unspeakable catastrophe. War and Peace is a work that transcends both history and description, not just for the scale of its narrative and setting, but for the scope of its philosophical interests. Since its publication, it has been praised as an essential work of literature by Ivan Turgenev, Gustave Flaubert, Thomas Mann, and Ernest Hemingway, and has been adapted for film, theater, and television countless times. This edition of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace is a classic of Russian literature reimagined for modern readers.

213,95 kr. '...not a novel, even less is it a poem, and still less a historical chronicle' - Leo Tolstoy Striking a balance between philosophical discussion and compelling story-telling, War and Peace transcends the restrictions that Tolstoy perceived in the conventional novel. Set in Russia during the Napoleonic era, this epic novel follows the fortunes of five aristocratic Russian families over the course of the French invasion. Tolstoy's timeless portrayal of the fates of families set against the backdrop of war is ultimately optimistic and life-affirming, with the educated, but socially awkward Count Pierre Bezukhov often giving voice to Tolstoy's own beliefs. Weaving together the historical and the personal, this powerful work of Russian literature encompasses the entirety of human existence.
