152,95 kr. Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Romance Studies - Portuguese Studies, grade: 65, University of Birmingham, course: BA Modern Languages, language: English, abstract: Loneliness is a major health concern, a debilitating condition and a universal human emotion. It at once fascinates and terrifies us, which makes it an invaluable literary theme. The lonely and the elderly are often synonymous; Portuguese authors known for their short stories, such as those above, invariably include among their works an ¿old woman¿ story in some form. The theme of loneliness comes as part of the package. The ways in which the narrative incorporates it, however, are as varied as the narratives themselves.

152,95 kr. Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Romance Studies - Portuguese Studies, grade: 65, University of Birmingham, course: BA Modern Languages, language: English, abstract: ¿[Auto da Compadecida] constrói-se a partir dos textos múltiplos que ... se mesclam.¿ (Santos: 1999, 265). Here Santos has described one of the defining characteristics of the text. Perhaps this mix of elements is a contributing factor to Sussasunäs universal popularity ¿ the undeniably comedic elements, except those relevant only to a Northeast Brazilian audience, are certainly entertaining in any language. Maybe the ¿serious message¿, which could indeed reasonably be said to form the ¿heart of the play¿, is as well so universal in nature that it addresses any audience. In order to access this message, however, the audience must at first be entertained and subtly educated. I would argue that the comic elements, though obvious, are integral to this process, rather than existing as an inferior technique ¿despite¿ which the moral can be communicated.

152,95 kr. Essay from the year 2012 in the subject Didactics for the subject French - Literature, Works, , language: English, abstract: ¿Comedy is, as I have said, an imitation of lower types...¿ Aristotle believed that, in order for a comedy to be truly believable and enjoyable, it had to involve characters to whom the audience could easily relate, i.e. people below the upper classes. Consequently, many comedies revolve around family dramas and Molière¿s "Le Tartuffe" is no exception. The entertaining family drama in this case concerns the man Tartuffe¿s attempt to manipulate and undermine Orgon and his family. It cannot be denied, therefore, that there exists an attempt to undermine the family, and that the schemer is Tartuffe himself. Mikhail Bulgakov condemns the character to be ¿...the most complete and consummate swindler, liar, scoundrel, informer and spy ¿ a hypocrite, lecher, and seducer of other men¿s wives.¿ It is clear that Tartuffe is an immoral man and at the very least partly, if not quite completely, responsible for the family¿s misfortunes.

152,95 kr. Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject French Studies - Literature, grade: 68, University of Birmingham, course: BA Modern Languages, language: English, abstract: ¿[Human beings] are responsible for creating their lives according to their own values...¿ Here summarised by Ursula Tidd, this idea suggests that we as humans are responsible for our own happiness by ¿creating [our] lives¿ ¿ in other words, through our choices. If we accept this to be true, as one is likely to when examining Simone de Beauvoir¿s novel "Les Belles Images" (Barcelone : Gallimard, 1966), then it would seem that Laurence¿s unhappiness is indeed due to her passivity. However, is it correct to imply that if one wants to be happy, one can be, simply by choosing it?

- With Particular Attention to Poetic Technique
152,95 kr. Essay from the year 2013 in the subject French Studies - Literature, grade: 72 (A), University of Birmingham, course: BA Modern Languages, language: English, abstract: Nerval¿s work is famously difficult to categorise. Was he a romantic? A surrealist? Or something else? The collection of poems "Les Chimères" could certainly be said to express elements of all of the above and perhaps more. Not originally intended as a collection, the poems nevertheless share many attributes, not least the question of identity. The treatment of this theme within "Les Chimères" is interestingly key to an understanding of the collection and one which raises several points pertaining to Nerval¿s particular poetic technique.

152,95 kr. Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Romance Studies - Portuguese Studies, grade: 62, University of Birmingham, course: BA Modern Languages, language: English, abstract: ¿The great art of writing consists in selecting what is most stimulant from the works of our predecessors, and in uniting the gathered beauties in a new whole, more interesting than the tributary models.¿ (Anon: 1797b, 451). This anonymous eighteenth-century reviewer demonstrates why a pre-existing literary tradition is so important for authors. If, however, the ¿works of our predecessors¿ refers solely or predominantly to the works of men, from what literary tradition does a modern female author draw? The lack of literary ancestors for Portuguese women has resulted in a culture dominated by the works of men, in which the few women writers struggle for success. The level of marginalisation experienced by Portuguese women in particular is indeed higher than that of other women when one considers the effects of the censorship laws of the Estado Novo dictatorship. The traditionalist and conservative views of a Roman Catholic State frowned upon women as authors and it wasn¿t until the Carnation Revolution of April 25th 1974, which overthrew the regime, that women were to have the chance to write freely.
