Gamble repeatedly challenges fate in this compelling memoir. At the age of nineteen, an early marriage ends because of infidelity. Shortly after a trip to view the Czechoslovakian insurrection of 1968, he is later escorted across Moscow's Red Square in the middle of the night by a Soviet Air Force jet pilot. Gamble contracts life-threatening amoebic dysentery and must return to the United States. Fully recuperated, he becomes a college professor. After serving academic appointments at two different schools, he opts out for a new and competitive career in business. Gamble discovers the ladder to success is steep. He loses his job, and with it, self- confidence. Frustration shrouds the middle ages of his life. Finally, he decides to risk everything on one last venture. Buying out his partner in a radio station, he undertakes a nearly impossible task to change his luck.
