In response to constant bear invasions, and with the heavy moral obligation to do no harm to the invaders, the city of Gibeah has decided to put every bear it can capture into the ancient maze at its center. They hoped in this way to both maintain their ethics and to never see the bears again. Three years later, a discredited scientist and inventor by the name of Daedalus believes that these bears are in fact capable of solving and escaping the maze, and are at the center of a brooding calamity threatening to destroy the city. At its heart, the book is a retelling of the myths of Daedalus-the story of Icarus, of the Labyrinth and the Minotaur, and Pasipha with her bull, all only slightly readapted so that they may contain a Leper Colony and an ominous threat of bears.

Seg returns from the Manor of Storms with a heavy burden of responsibility-a desert town to rebuild and a child to care for. Tokyo. A group of engineers is designing a chip called Kaishin that, when implanted in the brain, would allow consciousness to be shared between minds. It is almost completed. A recent college graduate named Reiko has been hired by the team's charismatic leader to conduct psychological experiments with the chip, using rats. At the same time, America has silently invaded Japan under the leadership of Karma, a computer program that has replaced the role of America's government, and Karma has taken a particular interest in the Kaishin Project... Now, the engineers are torn between a desire to complete Kaishin and to disrupt the plans of the Americans. Even though Reiko is not officially a member of the team and doesn't understand the technology, the decision will ultimately be hers: Us or Them.

For as long as she can remember, Seg has lived in the Orphanage. She was brought there by her spiteful mentor, Plumbess Roc, to learn the art and danger of Plumbing-to become a Plumbess. But when Seg struggles, when she finds nightmares in Plumbing's dark recesses, she always turns to another Plumbess-the warm, caring Plumbess Zag-for solace. Until Zag dies. Seg blames Eck for Zag's death-Eck who was raised by snakes, Eck who left a scar on Seg's neck when they were children. When Seg finally leaves the Orphanage, to find a Pipe Lord and do her work, she's weighed down by loss, hatred, and the heavy Lead around her neck, which reopens her old scar. But she takes her plunger in hand and follows the pipes, even though they lead back to her nightmares-and back to Eck.

Only one car exists in the world, and it's driven by a man going east. He's interrupted on his journey when he stops in a small town, where he is confronted by two individuals and the ideologies they stand for: Willem, who represents the belief in chairs; and Rachel, who represents the orthodox belief in the sanctity of the Car, the Road, the Passenger, and the Driver. To travel onward, he must deal with both.

Decay. The world is run by Karma, a machine that monitors adults across the world from the age of 14 onward by way of an implant in their brains. Meanwhile, an uprising is forming. Ronin. Long before the Karma Chip, a young woman joins a team of scientists in Japan who are racing to achieve the greatest technological advancement in history. Mars. Long after the rebellion, on an Earth slowly being depleted of resources, a stranger joins a new society; his only motivation is his unwavering hatred for the ruler of mankind. Freedom or Altruism? Us or Them? Man or Machine?
