Bases y puntos de partida para la organización política de la República Argentina se publicó en mayo de 1852 en Chile y se reeditó, junto a un proyecto de Constitución para Argentina. Juan Bautista Alberdi le envió el libro al entonces presidente argentino Justo José de Urquiza, quien se lo agradeció en estos términos:Su bien pensado libro es, a mi juicio, un medio de cooperación importantísimo. No ha podido ser escrito en una mejor oportunidad.Las Bases y puntos de partida para la organización política, están notoriamente influídas por el derecho constitucional norteamericano. Por ello, fueron el esqueleto de la Constitución Nacional Argentina, nacida en 1853. Sus redactores leyeron y releyeron la obra de Alberdi.Luego, los constituyentes de Santa Fe usaron este libro como modelo, un año más tarde.Cabe destacar en las Bases los capítulos dedicados a analizar las constituciones nacionales de la época y del recién constituido Estado de California. Alberdi analiza caso por caso, ejemplos de buenas y malas prácticas destinadas a fomentar la riqueza de las naciones o su pobreza.
