Esta traducción de Fragmentos de la Biblia, de fray Luis de León, célebre por sus altos vuelos poéticos, incluye:el Libro de Joblos Salmoslos Proverbios de Salomóny el Cantar de los Cantares.Cuando se difundió su traducción del Cantar de los cantares a partir del hebreo, en 1572, fray Luis de León sufrió cárcel por la Inquisición.Se le acusaba de infringir la prohibición del Concilio de Trento y se le encarceló en los calabozos que en Valladolid tenía el Santo Oficio. Los cargos que había contra él tenían que ver con su predilección por la Biblia hebraica, en lugar de la Vulgata.A continuación citamos algunos de los cargos que se le imputaban:En la ciudad de Salamanca a diez y siete días del mes de diciembre de mill e quinientos e setenta e un años, ante el muy magnífico e muy Rdo. señor maestro Francisco Sancho, comisario deste Santo Oficio... paresció siendo llamado el muy reverendo padre fray Bartolomé de Medina, maestro en santa theologia, en la Universidad de Salamanca... y entre las cosas que testificó en su dicho, dijo e declaró contra el maestro fray Luis de León lo siguiente...Item declaró que sabe anda en lengua vulgar el libro de los Cánticos de Salomón, compuesto por el muy Rdo. padre maestro fray Luis de León, porque lo ha leído este declarante.Item declaró que en esta Universidad algunos maestros, señaladamente Grajal y Martínez, y fray Luis de León, en sus paresceres y disputas quitan alguna autoridad a la edición de la Vulgata, diciendo que se puede hacer otra mejor y que tiene hartas falsedades...Estos Fragmentos de la Biblia tuvieron durísimas consecuencias en la vida de fray Luis de León. Durante cinco años permaneció aislado en una celda. A pesar de ello, fue en la cárcel donde escribió algunos de sus mejores poemas. En 1576 salió libre del proceso.Se ha hecho famosa la frase que pronunció a su vuelta a la cátedra de Salamanca: Decíamos ayer... que indica su triunfo interior contra la maldad de sus enemigos.
