Las Cartas marruecas son una obra epistolar de José Cadalso, publicada en 1789, tras su muerte. Contienen noventa cartas que se cruzan entre tan solo tres protagonistas.Gazel, un joven marroquí que visita España por primera vez, observa y comenta sus costumbres y su cultura.Ben-Beley, amigo y maestro sabio de Gazel, que vive en Marruecos;y Nuño Núñez, un español cristiano de quien Gazel se hace amigo.Con estas cartas Cadalso se propuso hacer una crítica de la nación. Aquí profundizó en la esencia de los problemas que han hecho que España, su patria, sea, con sus propias palabras el esqueleto de un gigante. La reflexión sobre el tema de España que inició fue seguida por Mariano José de Larra, los regeneracionistas y la Generación del 98, hasta el presente.El hilo conductor de toda la obra gira alrededor de la sátira hacia ciertas costumbres y vicios de la época sin seguir ningún orden. Tanto es así, que se cree que Cadalso las escribió en distintos años de su vida.En esta obra quiso por mero placer poner por escrito la hipocresía, la desigualdad, la brutalidad o las supersticiones que hacían inviable una sociedad basada en un espíritu científico y racional.El propio Cadalso nos presenta estas cartas, introduciendo un elemento nuevo en la literatura hispana, el espíritu crítico: Estas cartas tratan del carácter nacional, cual lo es en el día y cual lo ha sido. Para manejar esta crítica al gusto de unos, sería preciso ajar la nación, llenarla de improperios y no hallar en ella cosa alguna de mediano mérito. Para complacer a otros, sería igualmente necesario alabar todo lo que nos ofrece el examen de su genio, y ensalzar todo lo que en sí es reprensible. Cualquiera de estos dos sistemas que se siguiese en las Cartas marruecas tendría gran número de apasionados; y a costa de mal conceptuarse con unos, el autor se hubiera congraciado con otros. Pero en la imparcialidad que reina en ellas, es indispensable contraer el odio de ambas parcialidades.

Noches lúgubres es la gran obra del escritor y militar José Cadalso. Sin embargo, fue un libro que nunca llegó a publicar en vida. Fue siete años tras su muerte, en 1782, cuando vio la luz siendo editado en cuatro partes por el periódico el Correo de Madrid.Por su tono infractor y subversivo, Noches lúgubres compareció más de una vez ante el tribunal de la Inquisición y se hicieron de ella varias versiones adecuadas a los ideales de la época. Se entiende que, por su contenido, desde las primeras ediciones se trató de darle un tono moral a la obra.Por medio de modificaciones en el texto o por los prólogos de los editores se intentaba que este libro se impregnase de un tono más moralista, que pudiera hacerla admisible ante la censura o ante los criterios dominantes.Noches lúgubres nos narra la historia de Tediato a lo largo de tres noches especialmente lúgubres. Tediato, su protagonista, dialoga con Lorenzo, el sepulturero del cementerio en que está enterrada Filis, la amada de Tediato. Pretende desenterrar el cadáver para llevarlo a casa y suicidarse, incinerándose a sí mismo junto los restos de la amada.En la primera noche, cuando están a punto de lograrlo, empieza a salir el sol y deben parar. En la segunda, lo confunden con un asesino y lo encarcelan; se topa con el hijo de Lorenzo y conoce las desgracias de la vida de su amigo. Y en la última noche, se ve cómo se marchan para seguir con su cometido.Ninguno de sus deseos puede llevarse a cabo porque noche tras noche los sucesos los interrumpen, y ello lo acaba sumiendo en un negativismo vital. Noches lúgubres es una obra oscura, llena de pesimismo y presagios, escrita siguiendo la moda de los Nights thoughts de Edward Young.

Los eruditos a la violeta (1772) es una sátira breve y ligera contra un tipo de educación entonces frecuente: la erudición meramente superficial. El contenido y estructura quedan reflejados en el subtítulo puesto por el propio autor: Curso completo de todas las ciencias, dividido en siete lecciones, para los siete días de la semana, publicado en obsequio de los que pretenden saber mucho estudiando poco. El título alude a uno de los perfumes, el de la violeta, preferidos por los jóvenes a la moda. La obra tuvo un éxito inmediato y el título acabó proverbializándose. Tan fue así, que Cadalso escribió un Suplemento a la obra, que se incluyó en ediciones posteriores, y El buen militar a la violeta, publicado póstumamente en 1790. Ambos incluidos en esta edición.

Noches lúgubres fue censurada y prohibida por la Inquisición por su contenido macabro y sacrílego, no obstante llegó a ser muy popular durante la época del Romanticismo del siglo XIX. El argumento gira en torno al deseo del protagonista de desenterrar a su amada muerta. Los dos personajes principales de la obra son Tediato y Lorenzo, que reflexionan sobre la naturaleza del hombre, la fortuna, la justicia, la razón, el amor y el suicidio. Obra oscura, impregnada de pesimismo y presagios, escrita siguiendo la moda de los Nights thoughts de Edward Young.

Las Cartas marruecas conforman una novela epistolar publicada en 1789 de forma póstuma. La modernidad de la prosa, el carácter polémico de muchas de las Cartas, la permanente actualidad de muchos de los temas tratados por el autor en su crítica de España, y el tono fácil y ameno que mantiene en la obra contribuye a que esta obra haya ido ganando reconocimiento desde el día en el que se publicó.
