The best new houses from Mexico, currently the exciting epicentre of the architecture scene fuelled by brilliant young practices, a booming economy and a liberal sprinkling of concrete, with stunning photography by Edmund Sumner. Mexico's domestic architecture scene is booming, with some of the most exciting houses anywhere in the world popping up all over this vast country in the last decade. Photographer Edmund Sumner has rounded up the best examples, each of which plays with texture through the use of concrete and stone, maximizes the piercing quality of the light, and innovates in terms of space. The book invites the reader into the heart of a fun, young scene where individuality is key. Twenty-six houses demonstrate the trends and themes in Mexican residential architecture now, with plans and drawings included for the architects. However, the focus of the book is on the allure of the contemporary Mexican lifestyle as lived in these spaces. These are sun-saturated houses in extraordinary landscapes, beautifully photographed, and each with a detailed profile setting them in context.

188,95 kr. Farming in the generation between 1930 and 1960 saw changes on a previously unknown scale. On most holdings, work continued to be carried out by all the family members. Men, women and children all had roles in the production of crops and livestock. At busier times neighbours were called on for help, and workers were also hired on some farms, either full-time or seasonally. All of these relationships could lead to tensions and conflict, but they also led to great intimacy and kindness, with individuals showing commitment to the well-being of their family, their neighbours, and even their employers and employees. This book uses oral history to explore life on Ulster farms between 1930 and 1960. This valuable record of the faming community describes in fascinating detail the many changes in practically every aspect of working life and their associated patterns of social life, all in the face of increasinggovernment intervention, globalisation of markets, and the cataclysm of the Second World War. These massive changes have often been seen asdamaging social networks in rural areas, but the collective memories of those involved bear witness to their marvellous capacity to adapt. The oraltestimonies on which the book is based show that, for farming people, change could and did create new relationships and wider opportunities on botha professional and personal level.

- The Cold War and American Politics in the Truman Years
788,95 kr. What was left, in both senses of the word, of liberalism after the death of Franklin Roosevelt? This question has aroused considerable historical debate because it raises the question of why the United States, during the Truman years, developed a much less state-centered orthodoxy than other comparable, powerful liberal states. What were the consequences of this fundamental choice that would shape the character and direction of American society during the second half of the twentieth century? This book explores the role of the Cold War in shifting the center of gravity in American politics sharply to the right in the years immediately following World War II. Jonathan Bell demonstrates that there was far more active and vibrant debate about the potential for liberal ideas before they become submerged in Cold War anti-state rhetoric than has generally been recognized. Using case studies from Senate and House races from 1946 to 1952, Bell shows how the anti-statist imagery that defined the Cold War in political debate became the key weapon among right-wing and business interest groups and their political representatives with which to discredit political figures who wanted to expand political liberalism beyond existing New Deal measures. He depicts how this process implicitly endorsed socioeconomic inequality.
