"The Forsyte Saga" was the title originally destined for that part of it which is called "The Man of Property"; and to adopt it for the collected chronicles of the Forsyte family has indulged the Forsytean tenacity that is in all of us. The word Saga might be objected to on the ground that it connotes the heroic and that there is little heroism in these pages. But it is used with a suitable irony; and, after all, this long tale, though it may deal with folk in frock coats, furbelows, and a gilt-edged period, is not devoid of the essential heat of conflict. Discounting for the gigantic stature and blood-thirstiness of old days, as they have come down to us in fairy-tale and legend, the folk of the old Sagas were Forsytes, assuredly, in their possessive instincts, and as little proof against the inroads of beauty and passion as Swithin, Soames, or even Young Jolyon. And if heroic figures, in days that never were, seem to startle out from their surroundings in fashion unbecoming to a Forsyte of the Victorian era, we may be sure that tribal instinct was even then the prime force, and that "family" and the sense of home and property counted as they do to this day, for all the recent efforts to "talk them out."

The Foundations is a novel written by John Galsworthy, published in 1920. The story revolves around the Forsyte family, who are wealthy and influential members of British society. The novel is set in the early 20th century, just before the outbreak of World War I.The main character of the novel is Jolyon Forsyte, a successful artist who is also a member of the Forsyte family. Jolyon is a kind and compassionate man who is deeply concerned about the welfare of his family and society as a whole. He is married to Irene, a beautiful and intelligent woman who is unhappy in her marriage and seeks fulfillment elsewhere. The novel explores the themes of love, marriage, family, and social class. It also delves into the changing values and attitudes of British society at the time. The Forsyte family, with their wealth and status, are portrayed as being out of touch with the changing world around them. Jolyon, however, represents a new generation of thinking and values, which are more in line with the modern world. The Foundations is a beautifully written novel that is both insightful and thought-provoking. It is a timeless classic that continues to resonate with readers today.LADY W. Well, thank heaven there's no ""front"" to a revolution. You and I can go to glory together this time. Compact! The Forsyte Saga, first published under that title in 1922, is a series of three novels and two interludes published between 1906 and 1921 by Nobel Prize-winning English author John Galsworthy. They chronicle the vicissitudes of the leading members of a large commercial upper-middle-class English family, similar to Galsworthy's own. Only a few generations removed from their farmer ancestors, the family members are keenly aware of their status as "new money". The main character, Soames Forsyte, sees himself as a "man of property" by virtue of his ability to accumulate material possessions-but this does not succeed in bringing him pleasure. Separate sections of the saga, as well as the lengthy story in its entirety, have been adapted for cinema and television. The first book, The Man of Property, was adapted in 1949 by Hollywood as That Forsyte Woman, starring Errol Flynn, Greer Garson, Walter Pidgeon, and Robert Young. The BBC produced a popular 26-part serial in 1967, that also dramatised a subsequent trilogy concerning the Forsytes, A Modern Comedy. In 2002, Granada Television produced two series for the ITV network called The Forsyte Saga and The Forsyte Saga: To Let, and the two Granada series made their runs in the US as part of Masterpiece Theatre. In 2003, The Forsyte Saga was listed as #123 on the BBC's The Big Read poll of the UK's "best-loved novel". Following The Forsyte Saga, Galsworthy would go on to write two more trilogies and several more interludes also based around the titular family; the resulting series is collectively called The Forsyte Chronicles.

The Country House is a novel written by John Galsworthy, published in 1907. The story revolves around the lives of the Charwells, a wealthy family living in a country house in England. The patriarch of the family, Robert Charwell, is a retired judge who is proud of his family's history and traditions. However, his children and grandchildren are more concerned with their own lives and desires, and struggle to reconcile their individual ambitions with their family obligations. The novel explores themes of class, tradition, and the changing social landscape of England in the early 20th century. Galsworthy's writing is known for its realism and attention to detail, and The Country House is no exception. The characters are complex and multi-dimensional, each struggling to find their place in a rapidly changing world. The novel is divided into three parts, each focusing on a different generation of the Charwell family. The first part follows Robert Charwell and his wife, Lady Charwell, as they struggle to maintain their family's reputation in the face of changing social norms. The second part focuses on their son, Hubert Charwell, and his wife, who are torn between their desire for social status and their love for each other. The third part follows their children, who are coming of age in a world that is vastly different from their grandparents' time.Overall, The Country House is a compelling and thought-provoking novel that offers a window into the social and cultural changes that were taking place in England at the turn of the 20th century.1907. English novelist and playwright, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1932, Galsworthy became known for his portrayal of the British upper middle class and for his social satire. The novel begins: The year was 1891, the month October, the day Monday. In the dark outside the railway station at Worsted Skeynes Mr. Horace Pendyces omnibus, his brougham, his luggage-cart, monopolized space. The face of Mr. Horace Pendyces coachman monopolized the light of the solitary station lantern. Rosy-gilled, with fat close-clipped grey whiskers and inscrutably pursed lips, it presided high up in the easterly air like an emblem of the feudal system.
