The object of this work, is to give a brief history of persecution since the first introduction of christianity, till the present time. In doing this, we have commenced with the martyrdom of Stephen, and following the course of events, have brought the History of persecution down to the year 1830. In all ages, we find that a disposition to persecute for opinion's sake, has been manifested by wicked men, whatever may have been their opinions or sentiments on religious subjects. The full title of the book is The Book of Martyrs or "A History of the Lives, Sufferings, and Triumphant Deaths of the Primitive Protestant Martyrs from the Introduction of Christianity to the Latest Periods of Pagan, Popish, and Infidel Persecutions".Including a sketch of the author, this edition comes with a large print layout dedicated to make reading comfortable.

Le Livre des Martyrs de Foxe, par John Foxe, est un récit des martyrs chrétiens à travers l'Histoire de l'Occident du ier siècle jusqu'au début du xvie siècle, et mettant l'accent sur les souffrances des protestants et proto-protestants anglais depuis le xive siècle jusqu'au règne de Marie Ire. D'abord publié en 1563 par l'éditeur protestant John Day, le livre fut somptueusement produit et illustré avec beaucoup de gravures sur bois et fut le plus important projet de publication en Grande-Bretagne jamais réalisé jusqu'alors. Largement possédé et lu par les puritains anglais, le livre contribua à modeler l'opinion populaire britannique sur la nature du catholicisme pour de nombreux siècles.

Op 17 juli 1556 werd Katharina Cauches met haar dochters Periotina en Guillemine levend verbrand. Hun aanklacht luidde: 'dat zij de heilige bepalingen en geboden van de kerk niet hebben gehoorzaamd, de mis verzuimden bij te wonen en andere dingen nalieten, tegen het bevel van de koning en de koningin.'Periotina was zwanger. Door de vlammen barstte haar buik open en bracht ze een levende zoon voort. Deze werd uit het vuur gehaald, maar in opdracht van de schout er opnieuw ingeworpen en levend verbrand. Foxe schrijft: dat dit onschuldig wicht, dat nimmer de wereld had aanschouwd dan om het getal van Gods heiligen aan te vullen, in zijn eigen bloed gedoopt werd, en als martelaar geboren en gestorven is.In dit boek worden veel andere ontroerende gebeurtenissen verteld, ook van jonge mensen, die de liefde van Jezus Christus op een bijzondere wijze uitstralen.
