The book explores the concept of human destiny and its relationship to human origins. Fiske argues that human beings are not simply the product of random chance or natural selection, but are instead the result of a deliberate and purposeful process. He explores the historical, religious, and scientific perspectives on human origins, and discusses how these different perspectives shape our understanding of human destiny. Fiske also examines the role of free will in shaping human destiny, and argues that while individuals have the power to shape their own lives, they are also subject to larger forces beyond their control. The book is a thought-provoking exploration of the human condition, and offers insights into the nature of human existence and the meaning of life.1884. 88,95 kr. On the evening of December 19, 1900, Mr. Fiske delivered in Sanders Theatre, Cambridge, the address here printed. It was given at the request of Harvard University, in accordance with the terms of the Ingersoll lectureship, but it stood clearly in Mr. Fiske's mind as a continuation, and in a sense the completion, of that series of philosophic studies successively issued under the titles, "The Destiny of Man viewed in the Light of his Origin," "The Idea of God as affected by Modern Knowledge," and "Through Nature to God." Mr. Fiske delayed the publication of "Life Everlasting," and it is possible that he designed amplifying it. Yet, as he stated in his Preface to "The Idea of God," that both that book and "The Destiny of Man" were printed exactly as delivered, "without the addition, or subtraction, or alteration of a single word," so he may have intended to print this study in the same way. At any rate it is now printed exactly as it was delivered, his perfectly clear manuscript being carefully followed.

299,95 kr. Myths and Myth Makers is a book written by John Fiske that explores the origins and development of myths throughout history. The book is divided into two parts, the first of which examines the myths of ancient cultures such as the Greeks, Egyptians, and Scandinavians. Fiske delves into the symbolism and meaning behind these myths, and how they were used to explain natural phenomena and human behavior. The second part of the book focuses on more contemporary myths, such as those surrounding religion, science, and politics. Fiske argues that these modern myths are just as powerful and influential as the ancient ones, and that they continue to shape our understanding of the world around us.Throughout the book, Fiske emphasizes the importance of understanding the role of mythology in human culture and history. He argues that myths are not just fanciful stories, but rather essential components of our collective consciousness and identity.Myths and Myth Makers is a thought-provoking and insightful exploration of the power of myth and its enduring influence on human thought and behavior. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of ideas and the evolution of human culture.1900. Old Tales and Superstitions Interpreted by Comparative Mythology. 108,95 - 118,95 kr. The work just mentioned 1 is especially interesting as an attempt to bring the probable destiny of the human soul into connection with the modern theories which explain the past and future career of the physical universe in accordance with the principle of continuity. Its authorship is as yet unknown, but it is believed to be the joint production of two of the most eminent physicists in Great Britain, and certainly the accurate knowledge and the ingenuity and subtlety of thought displayed in it are such as to lend great probability to this conjecture. Some account of the argument it contains may well precede the suggestions presently to be set forth concerning the Unseen World; and we shall find it most convenient to begin, like our authors, with a brief statement of what the principle of continuity teaches as to the proximate beginning and end of the visible universe. I shall in the main set down only results, having elsewhere 2 given a simple exposition of the arguments upon which these results are founded.

We have thousands of titles available, and we invite you to search for us by name, contact us via our website, or download our most recent catalogues. IN publishing this somewhat rambling and unsystematic series of papers, in which I have endeavoured to touch briefly upon a great many of the most important points in the study of mythology, I think it right to observe that, in order to avoid confusing the reader with intricate discussions, I have sometimes cut the matter short, expressing myself with dogmatic definiteness where a sceptical vagueness might perhaps have seemed more becoming. In treating of popular legends and superstitions, the paths of inquiry are circuitous enough, and seldom can we reach a satisfactory conclusion until we have travelled all the way around Robin Hood's barn and back again. I am sure that the reader would not have thanked me for obstructing these crooked lanes with the thorns and brambles of philological and antiquarian discussion, to such an extent as perhaps to make him despair of ever reaching the high road. I have not attempted to review, otherwise than incidentally, the works of Grimm, Muller, Kuhn, Breal, Dasent, and Tylor; nor can I pretend to have added anything of consequence, save now and then some bit of explanatory comment, to the results obtained by the labour of these scholars; but it has rather been my aim to present these results in such a way as to awaken general interest in them. And accordingly, in dealing with a subject which depends upon philology almost as much as astronomy depends upon mathematics, I have omitted philological considerations wherever it has been possible to do so.

268,95 kr. Through Nature to God is a philosophical work by John Fiske that explores the relationship between nature and God. Fiske draws on a wide range of sources, including the Bible, Eastern and Western philosophy, and the works of scientists such as Charles Darwin and Herbert Spencer.
