The articles following are reprinted as they were written in spite of the fact that any picture of contemporary events is modified by subsequent increase of knowledge and by later events. In the main, however, the writer would still stand by what was said at the time. A few foot notes have been inserted where the text is likely to give rise to misapprehensions. The dates of writing [1919-1921] have been retained as a guide to the reader.

1886. From the Preface: How, then shall we unite the advantages of each class of textbooks? That is to say, how shall we make our psychology scientific and up to the times, free from metaphysics-which, however good in its place, is out of place in a psychology-and at the same time make it an introduction to philosophy in general? While I cannot hope to have succeeded in presenting a psychology which shall satisfactorily answer this question, it does appear to me an advantage to have kept this question in mind, and to have written with reference to it. I have accordingly endeavored to avoid all material not strictly psychological, and to reflect the investigations of scientific specialists in this branch; but I have also endeavored to arrange the material in such a way as to lead naturally and easily to the problems which the student will meet in his further studies, to suggest the principles along which they will find their solutions, and, above all, to develop the philosophic spirit. ""German Philosophy and Politics"" is a book written by the renowned American philosopher, John Dewey. The book is a collection of essays and lectures that Dewey delivered between 1915 and 1919, during his time as a professor at Columbia University. The essays explore the relationship between German philosophy and politics, with a particular focus on the ideas of Immanuel Kant, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel.Dewey argues that German philosophy has had a profound influence on political thought, both in Europe and the United States. He suggests that the ideas of Kant, Nietzsche, and Hegel have shaped our understanding of democracy, individualism, and the role of the state in society. Dewey also examines the impact of German philosophy on American pragmatism, arguing that the two schools of thought share many similarities. The book is divided into three sections. The first section explores the ideas of Kant and their influence on political thought. The second section focuses on Nietzsche and his critique of modern society. The final section examines Hegel's philosophy of history and its implications for political theory.Overall, ""German Philosophy and Politics"" is a thought-provoking and insightful exploration of the relationship between philosophy and politics. It is a must-read for anyone interested in political theory, philosophy, or the history of ideas. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
