That was because I associated this particular term with delicious things to eat like succulent, juicy spareribs or succulent luscious fruit, fresh off a tree! But here was an experienced gardener talking about a plant, which he called a succulent? It did not look remotely edible at all! Cacti belong to the "Succulent Plants" family. Plants with green leaves that are left in the sun without water are going to flag and wilt within a few hours. They are going to die within a few days. However, mother nature has made some plant equivalents of camels, which can go for long periods without any water. These plants normally live in a hot and dry climate and they have managed to survive since the dawn of time. That is because they are able to adapt themselves to their environment. They are going to pass the dry season as leafless shrubs, seeds or as dry bulbs. Cactus as well as other succulent plants are capable of storing moisture, in their stems and leaves, especially when there is plenty of moisture in the atmosphere. This is so that they can get plenty of liquid available to them, when the atmosphere becomes dry and arid.

The Magic of Onions - Onions in Cuisine to Cure and to Heal Table of Contents Introduction - Knowing More about Onions Perfect Salad Recipe How to Grow Onions Planting an onion How and When To Harvest Onions? Traditional Onion Recipes Traditional Onion Soup Croutons Cream of Onion Soup Curry Powder Recipe Traditional chicken - Meat stock with onions Traditional Onion Pickle Kashmir Spice Mix Garam Masala Recipe Meat Doh Pyazah-Literally Meat Two Onions. Traditional Onion Mixed grain Bread Farmers Onion Chutney Traditional Buttermilk Sweet and Sour Onions - French Style Clarified Butter How to dry onions Conclusion Author Bio Introduction - Knowing More about Onions Is there really Magic in onions, you may say, because according to you, onions are those sharp and pungent smelling, vegetables, which you normally do not allow within smelling distance of your nose and kitchen? It is possible that you have been brought up with a feeling that onion and garlic - those odoriferous pungent smelling herbs are not acceptable in select circles. Did you know that the United States is the third-largest producer of onions in the world - after China and India, and followed by Egypt, Iran and Turkey. But then there was a time when onions grew - and still grow - wild all over the lands of the USA and Canada. The Native Americans enjoyed wild onions and the Pilgrim fathers planted the onion plant first and foremost, before corn, on American soil in 1658. That was because they knew a freshly pulled out onion from their garden added this bit of piquancy to their meals. The onions eaten by men more than 5000 years ago, according to archaeological findings may have been wild onions, but 3000 years ago, Egyptians were writing about cultivated onions and the important part this healing herb played in their food. Egyptian workers building Khufu's pyramids ate these onions along with horse radishes in copious quantities 3000 years ago. [Incidentally, they were not slaves. They were free Egyptians. A majority of them were farmers who were asked by Khufu and afterwards Ramses, Soser and other pharaohs to help build pyramids, during the seasons when the Nile was not in flood to help cultivate their fields. So instead of sitting idly in their fields, they glorified in taking part in the building of monuments, which would magnify the pride of Egypt, and their Pharaohs throughout the world. There were no slave drivers with whips and lashes to make them sweat, whatever Mr. Cecil DeMille may want us to think. The diet of these farmers /pyramid workers was onions with herbs and horse radishes, bread made up of freshly ground corn and beer. They did not mind spending a part of their year building pyramids for their Kings who appreciated their hard work by allowing them grain from the nation's granaries.] These Egyptians knew all about the value of onions, and worshiped them as a symbol of eternal life in many circles. Ancient Egyptians had onions placed on their eyes, before embalming or mummifying and burial, so that they could enter the circle of eternal life. With daily portions of Onions, salt and herbs Roman soldiers were happy! Roman soldiers also included onions in their diet, especially in the evenings, when they ate onions with red cayenne peppers and the salt they got as salary for the day's work. In medieval times, onions were held to be so precious in many parts of the world, that landlords demanded onions as rent in lieu of coin from their tenants.

Black Pepper Decoction. Tuberculosis Cure. Cod Liver Treatment Conclusion Author Bio Introduction Vegetables are such an integral part of our daily lives, that we really do not bother much about their natural benefits and value. All we know is that they are those greens which we had to eat when we were children, because mommy said so, and she was bigger than us. And she was not a good cook. And also, she made every vegetable dish taste so boring, so blah and so bland, that one promised oneself that one would never eat it, when one grew up. That is the reason why so many of us grow up with an anti-vegetable subconscious feeling. But did you know that these green and leafy vegetables are the reasons why you kept so healthy, so energetic, and so bouncing when you were a kid. They were the natural mineral resources, which provided you with vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients, which help your muscles grow healthy, your skin glow and made you look so bright eyed and bushy tailed. And then you grew up and stopped eating vegetables. Instead, you began eating and other high-protein diet, without any greens or yellows or reds, which were harvested from plants/vines/herbs or shrubs. And that made your body deficient in all the essential vitamins. It also made you less healthy than what you were when you were a kid. And you did not get to know it. So here are some good reasons why you should eat plant produce, especially when they are green and leafy. Fibrous, leafy and green vegetables, fresh from the farm are, of course, the pride and joy of every health conscious and proud cook. If the proportions of these vegetables are increased in your daily diet, you are going to lessen your intake of carbohydrates, starch, and grain. This is going to benefit you and the general state of your health in the long run. It also means that you will never suffer from constipation. Nothing can take the place of cereals and grains in your daily diet in the same manner, vegetables have their own invaluable and irreplaceable place in the diet groups which make up your daily meals. The benefits of vegetables eaten raw, or cooked, then means that you are going to have a tasty meal, with natural digestive products being added to your system. Your blood circulation is going to get invigorated and your digestive system is going to get rid of any small ailments brought about by eating a starchy, fatty and high-protein high carbohydrate diet. Vegetables are amazing toxin eliminators. So if you are thinking of detoxifying your body with any star - endorsed detoxifying products, think again. Try increasing the amounts of vegetables in your diet. The best thing about fibrous vegetables is that it adds the amount of bulk to the fecal material so that it can be eliminated during the regular bowel movements every day. This keeps your system healthy. It also keeps your skin glowing, and you energetic. That is because there are no toxins accumulating in your body and weakening your system.

Table of Contents Introduction Chapter 1: Appearance Chapter 2: Behavior Chapter 3: Environment Conclusion Author Bio Bonus Dinosaur Content Introduction to Dinosaurs Facts about Dinosaurs Dinosaur Extinction Dinosaur Fossils Dinosaur Eggs Dinosaur Names Dinosaur Diet Feathered Dinosaurs Plant Eating Dinosaurs The Weirdest Dinosaurs The Deadliest Dinosaurs Flying Dinosaurs Kinds of Dinosaurs The Biggest Dinosaurs The Smallest Dinosaurs Author Bio Publisher Introduction Salutations young reader! Today we are going to embark on a journey back to the age of the dinosaurs. The dinosaurs are some of the most incredible animals that ever lived on our planet. They lived nearly 200 million years ago and thrived for about 165 million years. We humans have only been around for about 60,000 years and we have only been using computers for about 75 years. The dinosaurs mysteriously became extinct and disappeared from our earth, but left their fossilized remains behind. Dinosaur fossils have been constantly discovered in human history; the Chinese thought they were dragon bones and Europeans thought they were the bones of biblical monsters. Luckily, the scientific study of dinosaurs began in between 1815-1824 with the discovery of an Iguanodon fossil. Since then dinosaurs have been discovered all over the world. Their immense size, strange shapes, and wonderful natures make them inherently worthy of interest. The study of dinosaurs requires depth of imagination, analytical skills, and thought. The many unanswered questions about their lives, behavior, and disappearance provoke the curious to seek answers and ask even more questions. I hope this book fuels your imagination and makes you want to learn even more about dinosaurs. I hope you learn to appreciate the value of the dinosaurs and that you bring a spirit of openness and wonder on your journey back to the age of the dinosaurs. The animal we are going to study today is closely related to the dinosaurs. Its name is Tylosaurus. It was a very large animal that lived in the oceans during the age of the dinosaurs. We are going to learn about what it looked like, how it behaved, and explore its environment it lived in. We know what we know about the dinosaurs from a variety of sources including fossils, biology, and other scientific disciplines. Fossils are the ancient remains of the dinosaurs, the most familiar being their bones. Biological science is the study of life in general and many scientists compare the dinosaurs to modern day animals to support their theories. Before a talk about dinosaurs can take place it is important that we discuss the theory of evolution. Evolutionary theory supposes that all the animals we know and see today are the direct descendants of animals that existed millions of years ago. The dinosaurs and other creatures that existed millions of years ago either died out or gradually changed into different animals. For instance, birds are considered to be surviving dinosaurs because their ancestors survived the dinosaur extinction event (we will discuss this later). Remember that any time you see an * next to the name of a dinosaur, it means that a book has been written about this dinosaur in the Dinosaur Books for Young Readers series. Any word written in bold is an important scientific term which is defined in-text. Italics are used to denote the first time a dinosaur's name is mentioned in the book.

Nutritive value of Pineapples Fruit Rings - Pineapples to Heal Protection against the summer Traditional Pineapple Dishes Oriental Pineapple Rice Hawaiian Salad Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction My fascination with pineapples - Ananas comosus - started very early, especially because they were part and parcel of my childhood. Living in a tropical region means that you are going to have plenty of juicy tropical fruit to eat throughout the year, but pineapples were quite something else. Firstly you needed to get somebody to slice them, then you diced them, and then you either juiced the rich succulent pulp inside, or just ate them raw without juicing. When I was about 6 years old, an aunt who was living in the Philippines at that time, send me and my brother beautifully embroidered dresses made out of pineapple leaf fiber. These were a barong tagalog (Baro, for short and not Barong) for him and a Baro't Saya for me. Apart from that we were often sent beautiful pineapple fiber -Pina- clothes, which were so durable that they lasted me until I went to University and even after that. I liked these shirts very much, because of their very interesting history. According to a story I had heard, the Philippines were a distant colony of Spain. So the conquerors had to be different, had not they. They put out an edict. Only pure blood Spaniards could tuck in their shirts in their trousers. The conquered natives had to wear their shirts outside as a symbol of slavery. But the Philippinos were, as any brave race, very ingenuous. All these shirts were embroidered so beautifully that they became glorious works of art. So the Spaniards could have their unadorned tucked in shirts, but the natives wore their baros proudly. Alas, nearly 3 decades down the line, those embroidered Baros have disappeared from the Filipino markets. So sad to see a proud tradition die out.

The Science of Living is a series, in which you take example from daily life, and try to implement them in your own lifestyle and gain guidance from the lessons taught to you by the people who have gone before you based on their experience, knowledge and wisdom. Here was I with an easily obtained Degree in Natural Sciences and all my knowledge -garnered during a peripatetic childhood and youth-about natural remedies, ancient medicine and natural healing processes. The medical or the engineering fields were the only options left for good students, during the time I was at University. And I give them my stock answer, which I consider logical and sensible, "If I become a doctor, I will be giving my patients chemical-based medicine, and I will just be curing their bodies. On the other hand, if I stick to my habit of learning more about natural remedies and ancient remedies, I will be curing their bodies, as well as fighting the disease from the root onwards." My grandmother had learned about natural remedies and beauty recipes from her grandmother, and this wisdom was passed down the ages, from mother to daughter. For millenniums, every mother in every ancient civilization taught her daughters the rudimentary art of survival and staying beautiful and youthful with fruits, vegetables, spices, and herbs. This is now considered to be alternative medicine by doctors in the West. But this was the medicine with which people survived through centuries and stayed healthy. So if you believe in natural remedies, and naturopathic treatments, the cures are right around you. But many of us would rather go to a doctor and get some expensive medicine. The side effect of that medicine is going to be that some other part of our system is going to get affected. After that we go back to the doctor again and get some medicine to treat that side effect. That medicine produces another side effect. This is going to be your way of living for the rest of your life. However, if you eat natural medicines, you are never going to suffer from any sort of side effects. That is because natural products are more tuned to your body's systems and natural needs, than chemical drugs are. Say no to chemical drugs as far as possible For all those who have read Lloyd C Douglas' Magnificent Obsession and liked it, Mr. Douglas had some more words spoken by another of his popular characters, in "Disputed Passage". That doctor said something on the lines of - it is not our duty to just cure the body. We have to cure the mind and spirit too and heal them", much to the disgust of doctor Tubby Forrester, who considered every human to be a machine which needed to be put right, and where did emotions and spirit and soul come into this curing process? At the end of the story, Dr. Forrester had to accept the fact that human beings had to be treated by doctors who understood their psychological, mental, spiritual and emotional makeup. Unfortunately, this is not being done today, because doctors are harried, and have to see a number of patients till the end of a day.

Your geographical location is a major factor when considering the different ways that you may be exposed to dangers, however this is an issue that has the potential to affect you at home, on holiday, or even when you're visiting a new area. In such situations, it may be difficult to reach the emergency services or contact someone that may be able to help you - you could find yourself isolated from human settlement and left to your instinctive devices. The basics to survival medicine are often overlooked and cast aside when it comes to common knowledge. How many of us could use indigenous plants as an antiseptic? How many of us could bind a wound using natural dressings? These are key skills that we have no use for in our everyday lives and of course, we can always use a helpful app or the internet to help us, right? But, what could we do in situations when those luxuries are out of reach and the only tools we have is the environment around us? This guide will cover the essential basics in survival medicine, giving you a basic knowledge and understanding of how to cope with injuries in such distressing situations. From the contents of your survival pack to using potentially life-saving plants and applying emergency techniques - this guide will help you to build up a solid foundation. The history of beluga whales and humans Beluga whales and conservation Beluga whales and culture Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction The beluga whale, also known as the white whale, is a favorite of many people. It's intelligent and cute, not unlike a larger dolphin. What really draws a lot of people is its pure white color, which is attractive and attention-getting to humans in the same way a black jaguar or a pink slug is. As a sea creature, the beluga whale is an important part of its environment, and has had an impact on humans. Or, more accurately, humans have had an impact on the beluga whale. Much like puffins, the beluga whale helped humans live in areas that are hard to live in. This wasn't done without a cost to the beluga whale, however, as you shall soon see.

While animals and birds provided him with protein, he also looked towards the plant kingdom to provide you with herbs, spices, and other edible means of food. Out of these mushrooms and all their varieties have been an integral part of his cuisine down the centuries, all over the world. In ancient China mushrooms were used in alternative medicine more than 3000 years ago. They are still used to cure a number of ailments, along with problems related to the nerves, mind and psyche. The mushrooms used here in minute quantities have psychoactive and psychedelic properties. That is why ancient medicine men normally gave them to patients, who believed that they had gone through a spiritual trance which was life defining. These psychedelic trance inducing mushrooms are now called shrooms and even though they are illegal in many parts of the world, they are eaten by people who want a "fix". Edible mushrooms are called mushrooms, while the poisonous varieties were called toadstools. Only very experienced "mushroomists" know the difference between an edible variety and a poisonous variety. And this comes only with proper training from older experienced mushroom collectors.

Family Farming Safety - Keeping Kids Safe on the Farm Table of Contents Introduction Chapter 1: Why is Farm Safety for Kids Such an Issue Chapter 2: Children and Livestock Chapter 3: Children and Farm Machinery Chapter 4: Children and Grains and Crops Chapter 5: Overlooked Farm Hazards Chapter 6: Making Safety Fun Conclusion Author Bio Introduction According to OSHA, over 300 children die each year from injuries sustained on a farm, with the overwhelming majority of these accidents being children who live on these farms. http: //ehs.okstate.edu/training/oshafarm.htm Additionally, statistics from a number of sources all find that the number of injuries to children who live/work on family farms is over 20,000 per year. It would be inaccurate to say that every single one of these deaths could have been prevented if better safety practices would have been in place, it is completely accurate to say that more than half of the children that die as a result of farm accidents are avoidable. Likewise, accidents can happen even when stringent safety measures are in place, but a significant number of them could be eliminated with a few more lessons and rules in farm safety. This book is meant to serve as both a reminder and as an educational resource for farm families with children and grandchildren as well as families whose children visit and/or work on a farm. NOTE: Accidents happen-both non-serious and tragic accidents no one can see coming and those that are completely unavoidable despite our best efforts. This book is not meant as a guarantee against life, is not intended to serve as legal counsel and is not meant to serve as an endorsement for any product brand.

The history of pigs and humans Babirusas (also known as pig-deer) Pot-belled pigs Red river hogs Wild Boars Feral Pigs Peccaries Warthogs Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction Pigs have long been a part of human life. The ancient Israelites considered them unclean animals, and would not eat them; however, many, many cultures consider them a great source of food. The pig is present in the Chinese zodiac, a way of keeping track of years by assigning twelve animals, one to each year. It's also said to predict traits and such about people born in those years. It's the twelfth sign, because, according to legend, the pig showed up last to the great meeting where the animals were assigned to a system. The pig has long been a sign of gluttony, especially in Western culture. In the book Animal Farm, they greedily consume the best of the food, and do almost none of the work. Pigs are considered dirty, but the fact is, they tend to be very clean animals. They do consume a lot of food, but not all pigs are fat; it's mostly domesticated (bred to serve humans) pigs that are as obese-looking as you see in the modern day.

The technological boom, along with the ever increasing cleverness of the marketing industry, has resulted in the release of a number of diets that could do "wonders" for you. The wonders part is definitely true, but the kinds of wonders most of them do come at great costs, therefore, it's time to rethink as to where it all went wrong.A simple answer arises: we became modern. That's right, we became modern and abandoned the techniques through which our ancestors survived. Also, we became so disillusioned with our lives that we fell into the simple trap of "making our lives better, the easy way"; that's all you need to think about now. A simple glimpse of the Paleo Diet is that it's the diet that was followed by our ancestors, well over 10,000 years ago. At that time it was the only diet and comprised of raw foods like meat. Moreover, at that time, humans had to rely on their natural skills for cooking the meal too, as there was rarely a sustainable living atmosphere at that time. This is the basis of the diet that will be used in this book to make your life better in every aspect. Also it must be known that many practitioners started creating their own personalized versions of the Paleo Diet, however in this book the pure & original version of the Paleo Diet will be used without any additives.
